Windows 11 will let you uninstall more inbox apps, including Photos and Camera
Aug 03, 2025 am 01:09 AMMicrosoft is taking steps to streamline Windows 11 by giving users the ability to remove more preinstalled apps, such as Microsoft Photos. In addition, the company has revealed plans to remove the ‘Tips’ app in an upcoming update, expected to start rolling out next year.
As the name implies, the Tips app was designed to highlight new Windows features and offer helpful guidance for getting the most out of the operating system. First introduced in Windows 10 and later refreshed with a modern interface in Windows 11, the app is now being discontinued. According to official documentation, this move is part of a broader plan to eliminate several built-in applications.
Earlier reports indicated that Movies & TV and Maps were already being phased out of the out-of-box experience. Now, along with the Tips app, WordPad and Cortana are also being removed. While WordPad and Tips remain functional for now, Cortana appears to have been permanently discontinued.
With the release of Windows 11 Build 23585 in the Dev Channel, Microsoft introduced the ability to uninstall additional inbox apps.
As noted in the build’s release notes, users can now remove the Camera, Cortana, People, and Photos apps directly from the system. Previously, removing these apps required using PowerShell, but now they can be uninstalled with just a few clicks through the regular settings interface.
These apps were once considered essential components of the Windows experience, but over time they’ve become largely neglected, receiving infrequent updates and minimal development attention.
The reasoning behind making these apps removable is not entirely clear. Stock apps like Camera, Photos, WordPad, and Tips did serve practical purposes for many users. While Cortana’s relevance has waned in recent years, apps like WordPad and Photos still offered basic utility.
However, as many industry observers suggest, the goal may be to make Windows more user-centric and flexible. Microsoft has long aimed to improve system performance and efficiency, and allowing users to strip away unused components aligns with that vision.
More preinstalled apps can now be uninstalled in Windows 11 Build 25992
These updates are included in Windows 11 Build 25992, currently available in the Canary Channel. As typical with Canary releases, detailed information is limited.
One of the key updates in this build involves enhancements to the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol:
- Improved firewall rules for SMB provide stronger network protection.
- Windows 11 will now support SMB NTLM blocking exception lists.
- The SMB client can now connect to servers via TCP, QUIC, and RDMA, in addition to existing protocols.
- Support for certificate changes in SMB over QUIC client access control has been added.
Beyond SMB improvements, this build also brings better File Explorer performance, native support for creating 7-zip and TAR archives, and enhanced Snap Layouts with suggested arrangements.
