New Android Phones Are About to Have Much Faster Wireless Charging Speeds

Aug 02, 2025 am 06:09 AM

Summary

  • Qi2 25W enhances the Qi2 standard, boosting wireless charging power to 25W.
  • Major Android devices are expected to adopt Qi2 25W, though no release date has been confirmed.
  • Despite Google's involvement, it remains uncertain if the next Pixel phones will support this faster charging.

Qi2 marked the first significant overhaul of the widely used wireless charging standard in over a decade, but its impact fell short of expectations. Now, the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) aims to reignite momentum with a new advancement: Qi2 25W.

To recap, Qi2 was introduced in 2023 and featured the “Magnetic Power Profile” (MPP), designed to deliver MagSafe-style magnetic wireless charging to Android users. However, Qi2.1 emerged earlier this year, introducing a workaround that allowed manufacturers to label phones like the Galaxy S25 series as “Qi2 Ready” without built-in magnets—instead relying on magnetic cases.

New Android Phones Are About to Have Much Faster Wireless Charging Speeds Related ##### Qi2 Doesn't Always Mean MagSafe

The announcement of the Qi2 wireless charging standard got many Android fans excited about the prospect of MagSafe-like magnets being built into phones. Well, that hasn't quite turned out like we thought.

2 Beyond magnetic alignment, Qi2 also increased charging speeds to 15W. Now, with Qi2 25W, that limit is being pushed further. As the name suggests, wireless charging can now reach up to 25W. While some Android phones already offer 25W wireless charging through proprietary systems, standardizing it under Qi2 25W means broader compatibility across devices and accessories, making high-speed options more accessible.

But when will these devices arrive? The WPC states that “major Android smartphones” are expected to support Qi2 25W—though no official timeline has been provided. Technically known as Qi 2.2.1, this update hasn't yet appeared in any current Android devices, all of which remain capped at Qi 2.1. This suggests that compatible phones are still in development. The upcoming Pixel 10 series, expected later this year, could be among the first to feature it.

In addition to Apple iPhone, major Android smartphones will join the Qi2 ecosystem for the first time with this launch. Fourteen devices, receivers, and transmitters completed Qi2 25W certification testing in a limited launch last week. Full-scale certification testing is now open to several hundred devices waiting in the queue to be tested.

Still, it's worth noting that many anticipated MagSafe-style charging in the Pixel 9 series—something that didn’t materialize. Although Google has been actively collaborating with the WPC on faster wireless charging, it’s too early to confirm whether the Pixel 10 series will actually support Qi2 25W. In any case, widespread availability of Qi2 25W on Android devices likely won’t happen until 2026.
