Google Maps Hits Reverse and Brings Back Crucial Navigation Feature

You can spend less time looking at your phone.
The removal of Assistant Driving Mode previously impacted music app integration, a vital function for keeping drivers focused on the road. Later, Google introduced a workaround: a floating button at the bottom of the screen—provided you enabled the "Show media playback controls" option in navigation settings.
However, in a recent update to Google Maps for Android (version 25.28, followed by beta 25.29), that fix disappeared. The playback controls—and even the toggle in settings—were completely gone. Strangely, iOS users still had access, adding to the confusion among Android users.
9to5Google first reported the issue and later shared Google’s response: a bug was to blame, and the team was “actively working to fix an issue affecting media playback controls.” But this wasn’t just a minor glitch—the entire settings option, including the ability to set a default music app, had vanished from the app.
On both my Pixel 8 and Galaxy S25 , the playback functionality was missing, making it harder to manage music without leaving the navigation view.
Good news: the feature is back. Whether Google rolled back the update or swiftly patched the bug, the latest version 25.30 brings full restoration.
Head to Settings > Navigation and you’ll find the “Show media playback controls” toggle once again. Turn it on, pick your preferred music app, and playback controls will appear as they did before.
As shown in the screenshots above, everything works just like it did pre-update.
Whether this was an intentional test or a genuine bug remains unclear. Still, it wouldn’t be surprising if Google eventually phases out these controls in favor of Gemini-powered voice commands. With Gemini expanding across phones, watches, smart speakers, and even vehicles, voice-based interaction may become the norm.
For now, I’m glad the playback controls are restored. The only remaining gripe? That floating music button still overlaps the report button at the bottom of the screen—the one used to flag speed traps or road hazards, similar to Waze. One improvement at a time, I suppose.
