Why Is My Android Phone Not Ringing? Fix It Now

Missing an important call can be incredibly frustrating—especially when your Android phone isn’t ringing at all. The good news? In most cases, this issue is easy to fix. By following a few simple troubleshooting steps, you can quickly pinpoint the cause and restore your phone’s ability to ring, so you never miss another call again.

Why Isn’t Your Android Phone Ringing?

There are multiple possible reasons your phone stays silent during incoming calls. While hardware damage or malware infections can be culprits, more often the issue is something simple—like accidentally enabling Silent Mode, Do Not Disturb, or Airplane Mode. Call forwarding, misconfigured apps, or headphone settings may also prevent your phone from ringing.

Below are the most effective fixes. Try them one by one, testing your phone after each step until the ringing returns.

  1. Adjust your ring volume. It’s easy to mute or lower the ring volume without realizing it. Press the volume buttons and immediately tap the menu icon that appears on the volume panel. Make sure the Ring volume slider is turned up. Avoid adjusting media or notification volume, as they don’t affect call ringtones.

  2. Turn off Airplane Mode. When enabled, Airplane Mode disables all cellular functions, sending calls directly to voicemail. Swipe down from the top of your screen to open Quick Settings. If the Airplane Mode icon is orange, it’s active. Tap it to disable—once turned off, the icon becomes transparent.

  3. Disable Do Not Disturb (DND). This mode can silence calls depending on your settings. In Quick Settings, tap Focus and look for Do Not Disturb. If the button is white, DND is on. Tap it to turn it off (the button will become transparent), allowing calls to ring normally.

  4. Check for call forwarding. Some apps (like Google Voice) or carrier settings may forward your calls elsewhere. Go to Phone app > Settings > Call forwarding and disable any active forwarding rules.

  5. Review headphone call settings. If your phone is connected to headphones, the ringtone might be routed there. If the headphones don’t support call audio, you won’t hear anything. To fix this, go to Settings > Connected devices > tap the gear icon next to your headphones > enable Phone calls.

  6. Restart your phone. A simple reboot can clear temporary glitches. Hold the power button and select Restart. After the phone reboots, test with an incoming call.

  7. Scan for malware. Malicious apps can interfere with system functions. Use a trusted antivirus app from the Google Play Store to scan your device and remove any harmful software.

  8. Update your phone’s software. Outdated OS versions or apps may have bugs affecting call alerts. Go to Settings > System > Software update to check for updates. Also, update your apps via the Play Store.

  9. Perform a factory reset. If all else fails, back up your data and reset your phone. This wipes all data and reinstalls the OS, eliminating software-related issues. Go to Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset).

  10. Look for physical damage. Even if only the screen is cracked, internal components like the speaker or motherboard could be affected. If software fixes don’t help, contact your manufacturer or carrier for repair or replacement options.

Note: When Silent Mode is enabled, your phone vibrates instead of ringing. To disable vibration, go to Settings > Sound & Vibration and turn off vibration for calls.

Additional Tips:

  • Downloaded ringtones not working? Switch to a default ringtone. If that works, the issue is with the downloaded file or its format.
  • Outgoing calls not ringing? If no outgoing calls ring, it could be due to poor signal, service outage, or unpaid bills. If only one number isn’t reachable, the issue is likely on the recipient’s end.
