Summary
- Beeper now supports local chat connections, boosting privacy and making end-to-end encryption more effective.
- New premium features include Send Later, reminders, and Incognito mode, among others.
- iMessage support is still absent, but Beeper is progressing under new ownership.
You might already know Beeper. The app gained popularity by letting Android users access iMessage, and while that functionality is now gone, it's still a handy app that consolidates all your chats from different apps into one place. Now, it's getting even better and addressing one of its major issues—but it's still leaving another unresolved.
Beeper, the universal messaging app (which, by the way, was acquired by Automattic, the parent company of WordPress), has released an update focused on improving user privacy and introducing a range of premium features. The most significant change is the new option to run all your chat service connections locally on your own device, avoiding Beeper's cloud infrastructure entirely. This means that end-to-end encryption is now truly end-to-end, as messages no longer get decrypted and re-encrypted on a third-party server.
The basic Beeper app remains free for everyone, but the company has now introduced a paid subscription called "Beeper Plus" that unlocks a variety of advanced features. There's "Send Later," which lets you write messages and schedule them to be sent at a specific future time and date. There are also reminders, which help you set follow-up alerts for particular conversations to better manage your busy inbox.
A new Incognito mode is also available, allowing users to read incoming messages without sending a "read" receipt back to the sender. Additionally, there are AI-powered voice transcriptions, enabling you to convert audio messages into text. The app also supports adding multiple accounts from the same service, and with a higher-tier Beeper "Plus Plus" subscription, you can add unlimited accounts as needed.

Still trailing behind Apple.
6 It's great that we now have the option to run chat connections locally—not only does this make the experience smoother and more dependable, but routing messages through the cloud was likely a privacy concern for many, even with encryption in place to ensure the middleman server couldn't access the content.Despite how impressive these new features are, iMessage support is still missing—the feature that originally made Beeper popular. At this point, most current Beeper users might not be too concerned about that anymore, and being owned by a more "established" company probably means that reintroducing iMessage support isn't on the horizon. But a person can still hope.
