Microsoft updated Bing Webmaster Tools with new helpful insights and reports to assist you in improving your site's performance within Bing and overall search. Bing Webmaster Tools now includes a new IndexNow Insights report that offers more than just the URLs submitted through IndexNow. Additionally, a new top SEO Insights report has been introduced, highlighting your primary SEO issues.

Fabrice Canel, Principal Product Manager at Microsoft Bing, announced this update today at PubCon and shared the news on the Bing blog. IndexNow has grown to 2.5 billion URLs submitted, up from 1.2 billion six months ago. Moreover, IndexNow contributes to 17% of new URLs clicked in web search results, as noted by Canel.

IndexNow Insights reporting

The new IndexNow Insights report provides "actionable insights on IndexNow submitted URLs to boost their visibility and rankings," according to Fabrice Canel. The report delivers both high-level metrics and detailed analyses. Previously, the report displayed URLs submitted in the past 24 hours; the updated version shows URL counts with trends and additional actionable insights. It also highlights URLs discovered through crawling or other methods instead of IndexNow.

• Information about issues with crawled URLs and the status of your submitted URLs.
• Detailed reports on the number of URLs submitted, crawled, and indexed.
• Details on your most recent 1,000 submitted URLs, including their:

• Insights into the source of your URL submissions, such as Cloudflare, WordPress, manual submission, or other methods.

Top SEO Insights report

A new list of issues and insights now appears at the top of the Bing Webmaster Tools interface under Top Insights. This feature presents a curated and prioritized list of the key SEO issues identified by Bing for your website.

“Top Insights introduces a suite of personalized and prioritized recommendations enabling webmasters to identify and focus on the most impactful tasks for website optimization,” Microsoft explained. Microsoft also refreshed the navigation in Bing Webmaster Tools by removing the SEO section and listing those items directly in the main menu. Other minor navigation adjustments were made—for example, if you don’t use Bing URL submission, it won’t appear in the navigation anymore.

If you haven't yet adopted IndexNow, it might be worth exploring how to implement it for your website. For those using Cloudflare, activating it requires simply toggling a switch, and many CMS platforms already support IndexNow natively.

What is IndexNow? IndexNow allows website owners to instantly notify search engines of the latest changes to their website’s content. It uses a simple ping protocol so search engines can quickly learn when a URL and its content have been added, updated, or deleted, enabling them to reflect these changes swiftly in their search results. The co-sharing of IndexNow officially launched last month in January 2022.

How it works. The protocol is straightforward—generate a key on your server and then submit a URL to the search engine to inform participating search engines of changes. Steps include:

1. Create a key using the online key generation tool.
2. Place the key in a text file named after its value at your website's root directory.
3. Begin submitting URLs whenever your URLs are added, updated, or removed. You can submit one URL or multiple URLs per API call.
