Bing Deep Search, an optional generative AI feature designed to assist users with complex questions that lack straightforward answers, is now fully available to all users. Microsoft has announced that the Deep Search function within Bing Search can now be accessed by clicking on the Deep Search button located at the top of the search results page.
Initially unveiled in December 2023, Bing Deep Search was introduced as a tool capable of delving deeper into queries using Bing’s index and GPT-4 technology to provide more customized and comprehensive search results. The feature briefly launched in early February before being taken offline for further testing. It reappeared earlier this month, and now Microsoft has officially confirmed its release.
What's new. Jordi Ribas from Microsoft shared, “Deep search is now accessible. It utilizes our current Bing index alongside GPT-4 to refine and enhance your query while identifying potential intents. For instance, if you're looking for document camera information, choosing the top option would yield a complete page of enriched results.”
Here is his post:
Deep search is now available. It uses our existing Bing index and leverages GPT-4 to expand and enhance your query, and determine possible intents. In this example, if your intent is the document camera, then you’d select the top option and get a full page of enhanced results. pic.twitter.com/ZSdAVTcjoK

Michael Schechter from Microsoft mentioned it is now accessible to "all users," contrasting with its previous limited availability when we last discussed it.

How it functions. Deep Search operates based on Bing’s web index and ranking system. It employs GPT-4 to interpret various intents and variations behind each query, crafting descriptions for each to generate an "ideal set of results."
By utilizing a mix of querying techniques, Deep Search reveals results that wouldn't typically surface in standard Search outcomes.
Ranking of Deep Search results. The primary factor is how closely a page aligns with Bing's expanded description. Additional relevance and quality factors include:
- How relevant the topic is.
- Whether it offers an "adequate level of detail."
- If the source is credible and reliable.
- Its freshness.
- The page's popularity.
It's slow, very slow indeed. Deep Search doesn't load as swiftly as regular search results. Microsoft noted that Deep Search might take up to 30 seconds to finish, suggesting the feature may not gain traction due to user impatience.
However, it appears quicker and significantly less error-prone compared to what I observed in early February.
Why it matters. This represents another application of AI in generating search results. These results seem likely to attract more clicks than Bing Chat or Google Bard and even Google SGE. Only time will reveal its true impact.
Try it out, see if you appreciate it, and check whether the results arrive quickly enough to be beneficial.
