Eight years have passed since its last major redesign, and you might be forgiven for assuming that Google had left the Snapseed photo editing app behind—but the brand-new Snapseed 3.0 has just made its way to the iOS App Store, sporting a refreshed interface along with some new filters to experiment with.
Though it doesn’t bring in a huge number of new features, the app does receive a significant visual overhaul, making this an ideal moment to revisit Snapseed and all it has to offer. If you're aiming to perform professional-grade photo edits right from your phone, this could be exactly what you need—and best of all, it’s completely free.
(As of now, there's no official news about Snapseed 3.0 coming to Android. But considering it's a product of Google, it's reasonable to expect that Android users will likely see a similar update sometime soon.)
Getting started with Snapseed
Upon launching Snapseed for the first time, you'll be prompted to select an image for editing. From there, you’ll enter the updated interface featuring three tabs: Looks (for quick one-tap filters), Faves (your most-used tools), and Tools (a full list of available editing functions).
If you navigate to the Tools tab, you’ll notice an Edit Faves button—this allows you to choose which tools you want to keep within easy reach, whether it’s the crop function (to remove unwanted parts of an image) or the healing tool (which helps eliminate blemishes). The Faves tab also includes an Auto option that applies a set of algorithm-driven adjustments aimed at enhancing your photo automatically.
At the top of the screen are controls for undoing (the back arrow) and redoing (the forward arrow) your changes, as well as viewing all applied edits (the two stacked squares). You can export your finished image anytime by tapping the upward-pointing arrow in the upper-right corner.
Changing the look of your images
The Looks tab is arguably the simplest entry point into Snapseed’s many features: It presents a straightforward collection of Instagram-style filters, both in color and monochrome, that instantly transform the mood of a photo. These presets are activated with a single tap and don’t require any additional settings.
More filter options can be found under the Tools tab, including Vintage, Film, and Grunge. In this section, they’re referred to as styles, and they come with more adjustable parameters—like the intensity of the effect or how it's distributed across the image. Each style offers different customization options; for instance, the Black and white style lets you fine-tune brightness and contrast independently.
As you work on your image, you can even create your own custom filters: Go to the Looks tab and select Add look. This saves the essential visual characteristics of your edit (such as saturation, brightness, and contrast), allowing you to apply them to other photos. To manage your custom looks, scroll to the end and tap Manage to delete or modify them.
Exploring the Snapseed tools
On the Tools tab, you’ll find a wide variety of editing options, each with customizable settings. For basic adjustments like brightness, contrast, highlights, and shadows, start with the Adjust feature. For more advanced control over tonal values, use Curves. The Tonality tool, on the other hand, enables you to adjust different tones in the image individually.
For portrait photography, the Portrait tool helps enhance facial highlights when a person is the main focus of the image. With the Text tool, you can add simple text overlays: Choose a style from the bottom carousel, then double-tap the text to edit the content. Want to frame your picture? Use the Frames tool to apply various border styles.
For detailed editing, the Brush tool allows you to paint directly onto the image to alter exposure, temperature, and more. There's also the Selective tool, which enables localized adjustments rather than affecting the entire photo. You can tweak brightness, contrast, and saturation selectively, using a simple dial to control the strength of each adjustment.
