The Google Phone App Is Getting Two New Features You'll Love
Jun 26, 2025 am 06:01 AM- The Google Phone app has ushered in the Material 3 design update, adapted to Android 16, optimized the call interface and added a collection bar.
- The call history is more concise and arranged in chronological order, making it easier to view multiple calls from the same number.
- The change is based on user feedback and is designed to avoid accidentally touching hang up or answering.
Last month, Google was discovered to be making major changes to the Phone app. Now with the release of Android 16, we finally have a glimpse of these changes - I'm very excited about it.
The "Phone by Google" app is the default dial-up app on many Android devices, and I have always disliked its incoming call interface. When the phone is locked and receives an incoming call, a floating phone button will appear at the bottom of the screen. You should have just swiped up to answer and down to reject.
However, in fact, I always think that the space left under the button for the slide operation is too small, and it takes multiple swipes almost every time to complete the rejection operation. Google has actually solved this problem in the Clock app, which uses a horizontal capsule slider to turn off or delay the alarm. It is gratifying that the Phone app will also adopt this style.
This change is part of the Material 3 Expressive update launched by the Phone by Google app for Android 16. Currently, if you register a beta version in the Play Store, you can experience it. Google says the improvement stems from user feedback and helps avoid accidentally answering or hanging up calls when you remove your phone from your pocket. I think the overall experience has improved a lot.
The second gratifying change is the addition of a favorites bar at the top of the Home tab, replacing the original favorites standalone tab. The "Recent" tab has also been merged into the new "Home" tab, making the interface more concise. You can now see your favorite contacts and all call history in one page. There are also filtering options such as "Missed", "Contacts", "Spam" at the top, and the "Contacts" tab page is completely removed.
You may also notice that call logging looks simpler. If you receive multiple calls from the same number, they are no longer classified under an expandable entry. This should make it easier for you to understand the timing of the call. If someone calls you multiple times, it will be more visible now.
As mentioned earlier, these changes can be found in the latest beta version of the Phone by Google app in the Play Store. While Google says these features are still under test, it is no surprise that they will soon appear in the official stable version. Not only does it have better features, but its appearance is also consistent with Android's new direction.
