When Android used navigation buttons, a wide black strip appeared at the bottom of each screen to accommodate the back, home, and recent apps buttons. However, following the shift to full-screen navigation gestures in 2019, this space became unnecessary. Despite this change, a remnant black bar still appears when using the keyboard.

Samsung devices are especially affected by this issue, but fortunately, One UI offers settings to eliminate all signs of this black bar. Depending on your preference, you can even remove the thin black strip that indicates the gesture area, and these changes will apply universally, not just under the keyboard.

Disable the 'Hide Keyboard' Button

Start by opening the Settings app from your app drawer. Navigate to "Display" in the main menu, scroll down, and select "Navigation bar." Within this section, turn off the toggle switch next to the "Show button to hide keyboard" option.

SIDE NOTE: If you’re here looking to remove the black bar housing the traditional Recents/Home/Back buttons, use this opportunity to switch the top option from "Buttons" to "Swipe gestures." This will activate the new Android gestures, and the steps in this guide will work effectively.

Congratulations! You’ve already eliminated most of that bothersome black bar. However, if you’re still bothered by the thin bar showing where navigation gestures begin, you have two options.

First, you could disable “Gesture hints” in the same “Navigation bar” settings menu to remove both the bar and the white line inside it. However, this disables the quick-switch gesture. To maintain full functionality while removing all traces of the black bar, proceed with Steps 2 and 3 below.

Install Good Lock & NavStar (Optional)

Open the Galaxy Store app from your app drawer, search for and install a first-party Samsung app called Good Lock. After installation, tap the "Open" button at the bottom of the screen and select NavStar from Good Lock’s main menu, which will reopen the Galaxy Store. Tap "Install" to add the Good Lock plugin.

Enable 'Transparent Hint' (Optional)

Now, open the Good Lock app from your app drawer and select "NavStar" again. This time, you’ll be directed to the module’s settings page. Ensure the main toggle at the top of the screen is enabled, then turn on the toggle next to "Transparent hint."

This makes the final trace of the black bar transparent across all apps, including when using the keyboard. The white gesture indicator line remains, ensuring quick switching functionality, but your keyboard now starts right at the bottom edge of the screen!
