The best streaming services boast extensive content libraries, making recommendations valuable—they guide you toward movies and shows you're likely to enjoy, based on your previous viewing habits.
However, sometimes these recommendations aren't effective. Perhaps another family member used your account, altering the suggested titles in a direction you dislike. Or maybe the suggestions aren't helpful, or you simply desire a clean slate, free from past viewing history.
In such cases, resetting your recommendations can help—and it's relatively easy, regardless of the streaming service. There's a certain freedom in clearing your viewing record and starting anew.
Netflix
Log into your Netflix account online, hover over your account avatar (top right), and select Manage Profiles followed by your name. You can either click the circular icons to hide specific titles or choose Hide all to conceal everything.
This action should reset your recommendations—though you can fine-tune them further by clicking the thumbs up and thumbs down icons that appear when you hover over the thumbnails on screen.
Alternatively, you can begin with a completely new profile. From the Manage Profiles page, click Add Profile, and follow the steps to set up a fresh one with a clean slate of recommendations.
Hulu
Navigate to Hulu on the web, log in to your account, and hover over your account picture (top right). Select Account, then choose Privacy and Settings and California Privacy Rights. Click Watch History, then press Clear Selected.
Keep in mind that this will erase the watch history for all profiles linked to your account, so consult with other family members first. Without any viewing history, your recommendations should reset.
Another option is to create a new profile within your Hulu account, starting afresh. Hover over your account name (top right), then pick Add Profile to accomplish this.
Amazon Prime Video
As an Amazon Prime Video subscriber, you can reset the recommendation algorithm by visiting the Prime Video site, hovering over your account avatar (top right), and selecting Account & Settings from the pop-up menu.
Next to any title you wish to remove from your Prime Video watch history, click Delete movie from Watch History or Delete episodes from Watch History. Unfortunately, there's no bulk delete feature, so this may take some time.
An alternate method to reset your recommendations is to start with a fresh profile within your Prime Video account. Hover over your account icon, then select Add new and follow the on-screen instructions.
Disney Plus
Disney Plus stands out among streaming services since it lacks an option to reset recommendations or edit your viewing history. All your past viewings are recorded and cannot be accessed.
You cannot rate the recommendations or your previous watchlist. When logged in on the web, you can only remove items from the Continue Watching bar by clicking the stop sign circle icons. To obtain a new set of recommendations on Disney Plus, you must create a new profile, which is simple: Hover over your account picture (top right), then select Add profile. You'll then be prompted to choose an avatar and name.
YouTube
YouTube heavily relies on recommendations to keep users engaged, and they appear throughout the interface. If you encounter something undesirable on the web, click the three dots next to it and select Not interested.
For a thorough reset, hover over your account picture (top right), then pick Your data in YouTube. Underneath YouTube Watch History, click the arrow and Manage history to view your recent video views. Click Delete and Delete all time to perform a complete wipe and reset your recommendations. YouTube also allows you to delete specific parts of your viewing history and automatically erase it after a set period.
Apple TV Plus
When it comes to Apple TV Plus, recommendations aren't as prominent (perhaps due to the limited content). Nonetheless, you still encounter the For You section across various devices.
Resetting your recommendations depends on the device you're using. You must clear your entire viewing history since individual titles cannot be removed. To achieve this on Apple TV Plus via the web, click your profile picture (top right), then select Settings and Clear Play History. This option is also available through the Apple TV app on macOS: Choose TV > Settings > Advanced, then Clear Play History.
