Google updates its spam policies document

Google has recently refreshed its spam policies documentation as part of a routine update. Additionally, it has provided more information regarding the site reputation abuse policy and expanded and clarified other aspects of its search spam policies and guidelines.

Reason for the Update: Google mentioned, "We periodically review and refresh our documentation. This update forms part of that process."

What’s New: The significant change is the addition of a new section to the site reputation abuse policy. This section states:

"Close supervision or engagement occurs when the primary host site is directly creating or generating unique content (for instance, through employees directly hired by the primary site or freelancers working for the primary site's staff). It does not involve working with third-party services (like 'white-label' or 'turnkey') whose main aim is to redistribute content to manipulate search rankings."

Other modifications are subtler, and you can compare the current version with the archived version here. These changes include:

  • The introductory paragraph was updated.
  • The definition of link spam was revised.
  • The section on machine-generated traffic (or automated traffic) was updated.
  • The misleading functionality section was updated and expanded.
  • The scraping section was simplified.
  • Other minor adjustments were made.

Google noted that they have "clarified some wording in our spam policies for Google web search to focus more on what constitutes web spam and the associated tactics." They also incorporated an explanation of "close involvement" from their blog post for easier reference and clarified that attempting to bypass their policies could lead to lower rankings or no visibility at all.

Why This Matters: Some believe that when Google modifies its search policies, penalties or new algorithmic actions or manual actions might soon follow. Whether this happens or not remains to be seen.

Regardless, it is crucial to keep abreast of the latest documentation changes Google implements, particularly concerning its search policies. Therefore, take some time to review the updated documentation.
