May 12, 2025 am 09:33 AMGoogle Messages' Magic Compose: Your AI-Powered Texting Assistant
Google Messages has integrated Magic Compose, a generative AI tool designed to enhance your texting experience. This feature offers intelligent reply suggestions and the ability to rewrite your message drafts in various styles. While currently in beta, Magic Compose promises a significant upgrade to text messaging.
Before you begin, note that Magic Compose:
- Sends up to 20 previous messages (including emojis, reactions, and URLs) to Google's AI servers for suggestion generation.
- Does not store your messages, use them for training, or access end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) messages. It may, however, process image captions and voice transcriptions.
- Discards messages immediately after generating suggestions. Data is only sent when you actively use Magic Compose.
Requirements:
- Android phone with a US SIM card (Android Go phones are not supported).
- Age 18 or older.
- Signed into your Google Account within the Messages app.
- English language only (currently).
- Messages by Google beta app (see instructions below).
Step 1: Join the Messages by Google Beta Program
Magic Compose is currently in limited beta. Google One subscribers are prioritized. To join or update:
- Visit the Messages by Google app page on the Google Play Store. ([Play Store Link: Messages by Google (free)](This should be a real link, but I cannot create one here. Replace with actual link.))
- If already in the beta, tap "Update." Otherwise, tap "Join" and confirm in the pop-up window.
Step 2 (Optional): Enable RCS Chats
While Magic Compose now supports SMS/MMS, enabling RCS chats may improve its functionality.
- Open Messages, tap your profile photo (top right).
- Select "Messages settings," then "RCS chats" (or "Chat features" then "RCS chats").
- Toggle "Turn on RCS chats" ON.
Step 3: Activate Magic Compose
- Open a conversation or start a new one.
- Tap the pencil-and-star icon (left of the text field) or the ">" button to reveal the icon.
- Tap "Try it" to accept the terms.
Step 4: Using Magic Compose for First Messages or Replies
Tap the Magic Compose button for suggested opening lines (new conversations) or replies (existing conversations).
Step 5: Rewriting Drafts with Magic Compose
Type your message, tap the Magic Compose button, and select from various rewrite styles: Remix, Short, Formal, Excited, Chill, Lyrical, and Shakespeare.
Step 6: Deactivating Magic Compose
To disable Magic Compose:
- Go to Messages settings, then "Suggestions."
- Toggle "Magic Compose" OFF. Alternatively, leave the beta program via the Play Store and reinstall the standard app.
Enjoy the enhanced texting experience provided by Google Messages' Magic Compose! Remember to replace the bracketed Play Store link with a functional one.
