However, the step to "fully automate" or "one click" your way to a Marketing/Advertising plan that is distributed across several different communication channels and effectively connects with many is a lot harder than it sounds. Advertising is a fundamental living trait. It’s what all living things do, from birds chirping to dogs barking, asserting their message and establishing their presence. Humans are no different in their attempts to be unique. And that's the issue: how will AI automation or one-click advertising create uniqueness, difference from the crowd, and in particular, "rage against the machine"? From within the machine? I don’t think so."

The holding company was built for a time when storytelling, media buying, and consumer insight were fragmented. Today, the platform is the channel, the data, and the distribution.

And the AI? It’s the last mile. It sits in the user’s pocket, anticipates their intent, and steers the interaction before a brief is ever written.

In that world, holding companies don’t evolve—they vanish.

Because the agency becomes a friction in a system that worships fluidity, and whoever is closest to the consumer controls the conversation.

Today, that’s no longer a strategist, a planner, or a brand team.

It’s the model.

Automation And The Art Of Persuasion

This isn’t just about speed or cost. It’s about what happens when we remove friction, not just from the workflow, but from the thinking.

As my friend, colleague, and card-carrying Mad Man, Chief Creative Officer Ernest Lupinacci, puts it:

“In any innovative endeavor, friction isn’t a flaw; it’s a feature. It’s the driver of comprehension, transformation, cognitive flexibility, and the best of art and culture. Whether in synapses or symphonies, friction is what forces you to stretch. It’s how your mind adapts and creates meaning. AI is ultimately just a very technologically sophisticated tool, but if you use AI like you use a Roomba, you’ll get results, but you won’t get resonance.”

Lupinacci also reminds us that when Bill Bernbach left Grey in 1947 to start Doyle Dane Bernbach (DDB), he wasn’t walking away from advertising—he was walking toward its soul. In his resignation letter, Bernbach warned that the industry was becoming too reliant on technology and science.

“Advertising,” he wrote, “is fundamentally persuasion—and persuasion happens to be not a science, but an art.”

That insight isn’t nostalgia. It’s a warning label we’ve ignored.

Because when we confuse automation with authorship and scale with originality, we don’t just erase the artist.

We erase the art.

The danger isn’t just that AI will replace our jobs. The danger is that we will replace ourselves—inch by inch, prompt by prompt—until we no longer remember what it felt like to make something real.

If you’re building with AI, ask yourself this: Am I amplifying the inspiring uniqueness of human brilliance—or replacing it with the suffocating sameness of synthetic volume?

Because the point isn’t productivity. Its meaning. To create is to leave a trace. If AI erases the struggle, what’s left behind isn’t art. It’s output.
