We might be seeing a faster chip in the standard iPhone 17 – but no RAM upgrade

We're likely just a few months away from the iPhone 17 release, and fresh leaks now reveal two important specs for the base model — though only one of them marks an improvement over the iPhone 16.
Analyst Jeff Pu (via 9to5Mac) reports that the standard iPhone 17 will feature the new A19 chip, as will the iPhone 17 Air. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are said to be equipped with the more powerful A19 Pro chipset.
This is a positive update since Pu had earlier speculated that the entry-level iPhone 17 would retain the same A18 chip used in the iPhone 16 — a move Apple previously made with the iPhone 14 series back in 2022.
It’s fair to argue that today’s iPhones already offer ample performance for most everyday tasks, and using an older processor might have led to a lower price point for the iPhone 17. However, it seems Apple has decided not to reuse the A18 this time around.
No RAM boost?
Although Pu confirms the chipset upgrade, he also maintains that the standard iPhone 17 will retain 8GB of RAM — the same as the iPhone 16. The rest of the lineup, however, is reportedly getting an increase to 12GB.
Earlier rumors had hinted that all iPhone 17 variants — including the base model — would see a RAM bump compared to their predecessors. This latest report casts doubt on those claims.
More memory would logically support Apple Intelligence features, so it would be unusual for the iPhone 17 to remain at 8GB while the iPhone 17 Air steps up to 12GB. Still, nothing is confirmed until Apple officially introduces the devices.
Mark Gurman, a trusted Apple insider and Bloomberg journalist, has suggested that the iPhone 17 lineup will be introduced either on Tuesday, September 9, or Wednesday, September 10. We'll continue to bring you updates as more leaks surface.
