Google is paying money to Pixel 6a owners to say sorry for limiting their phone batteries
Jul 09, 2025 am 01:06 AM- More support options for Pixel 6a owners have been revealed
- You can get a $100 payment or $150 in Google Store credit
- Google has set up a website where you can make your claim
The ongoing Google Pixel 6a battery issue is still unfolding, with new details now emerging about how owners of the 2022 device can claim up to $150 (roughly £110 / AU$230) from Google – which could help towards purchasing a replacement phone.
For those unfamiliar with the situation, Google is currently deploying a required update for certain Pixel 6a devices that are at risk of overheating. Recently, there have been several reports of these phones catching fire, prompting Google to take action.
According to the company, this update will "reduce battery capacity and charging performance" and will arrive as part of Android 16. Only some Pixel 6a units are affected by this potential overheating issue – although Google hasn't gone into specifics, you can check if your device qualifies via their official website.
Now, thanks to 9to5Google, more information has surfaced. Eligible Pixel 6a users will be given three choices: a complimentary battery replacement, $100 (approximately £75 / AU$155) in cash, or $150 (around £110 / AU$230) in Google Store credit.
How to claim
It appears that opting for the battery replacement will lift the restrictions introduced by Android 16 on battery performance – although you'll need to send your phone in for repairs and be without it temporarily.
No matter which option you choose, you can access the process here. You’ll be asked to provide your email address and your phone's IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number to verify eligibility – you can locate your IMEI by navigating to About phone within Settings.
I’m unable to test the steps on Google’s site since I don’t have an eligible Pixel 6a IMEI number, but screenshots shared by 9to5Google indicate that Payoneer will handle the cash compensation. For those outside the US, the $100 or $150 amounts will be converted into your local currency automatically.
Notably, 9to5Google also found that some users have received vouchers worth $125 (approximately £90 / AU$190) applicable towards a Google Pixel 9a (priced at $499 / £499 / AU$849), so it may be worth checking your inbox – though these vouchers cannot be combined with the $150 store credit offer.
