Recall's Wider Rollout, Image Actions, and More Windows Changes: Windows Wednesday
Jul 18, 2025 am 03:02 AMThe image description feature in Click to Do is currently being launched among internal beta users on Copilot PCs equipped with Snapdragon processors, and will then support Copilot PCs with AMD and Intel processors.
Administrator protection
Administrator protection is an upcoming security feature for Windows 11. Microsoft says it will "protect administrator users' floating administrator rights, allowing them to perform all administrative actions through instant administrator rights." The feature is turned off by default and needs to be enabled manually in the account-protected Windows Security Center or through Group Policy.
This feature modifies the behavior of administrator permission prompts, such as the prompts you see when installing software or changing certain Windows settings. When you grant administrator permissions to a task, Windows will create a "hidden, system-generated, profile-detached user account" to authorize the request, and the account will be deleted after the task is completed. This prevents malware or other programs from exploiting elevated permissions, bringing multiple security benefits.
Memory function
The controversial memory feature in Windows is now enabled in the European Economic Area (EEA) release preview channel. In all regions, the same update allows you to reset memories and all of their data, or export your memories data for other applications.
New options are available in Settings > Privacy & Security > Memories & Snapshots. It should be noted that the memory function is only available on Copilot PC.
set up
The default application settings page for Windows 11 has always been confusing and useless, probably intentionally – we've all seen how Microsoft begged users not to change their browsers. Thankfully, the settings page has changed now.
When you set the default browser, there are now separate check boxes for pinning it to the taskbar and the Start menu in case you don't want Windows to do this automatically. In addition, more file types have been added to the Change Default Programs list and a new button is added to make your default browser open all PDF documents at the same time.
Taskbar icon zoom
Microsoft is introducing taskbar icon zoom to Windows internal beta users of the Canary channel. The feature was already available on Dev and Beta channels back in April, so it's not the first time we've seen it, but it's still worth mentioning.
"Taskbar icon zooming automatically reduces the icon to a smaller size when the taskbar appears crowded by too many fixed or open applications. This means you can keep more apps visible and accessible without going into the secondary menu. It's all about making your workflow smoother and more efficient."
The taskbar settings page in the Windows Settings app offers three smaller icon options: only enabled, always enabled, or never enabled.
Fast machine recovery
The fast machine recovery feature debuted at Microsoft's Ignite 2024 conference and is currently being launched to users of the Canary channel's internal beta. If the PC has problems during booting, it will automatically switch to the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), connect to the Internet, and check if there are any fixes available on Windows Update.
This helps avoid a CloudStrike-like event when a flawed update crashed the startup process of millions of Windows PCs and servers. Hopefully it will be promoted to other Windows 11 release channels as soon as possible.
Add custom vocabulary to dictionary in voice access
Now you can add your own defined vocabulary to the dictionary when using the voice access feature in Windows 11 (voice system control function). "Adding your own vocabulary, including difficult-to-pronounce words, to a dictionary for voice-access, can help improve dictation accuracy," Microsoft said in a blog post. "It improves the accuracy of recognition of these vocabulary by creating a bias that helps voice access understand the context and proactively understand your specific vocabulary."
You can access the Add to Vocabulary option in the menu via voice, or add your own vocabulary after spelling a word with the Spelling That or Correct That command.
Screen masking function in the narrator
Narrator, the default screen reader for Windows, is now launching a new option called "Screen Mask". This feature will completely blacken the screen, leaving only Narrator's audio as the only way to interact with the computer.
"This is especially useful in public places or shared environments, allowing users to read and process sensitive information without revealing information to others nearby," Microsoft said in a blog post. This feature can be toggled by pressing Caps Ctrl C when running Narrator.
Energy-saving mode
Windows 11 is testing an "adaptive power saving mode" feature that limits background activity based on current power status and system load, but does not change screen brightness. Many people may not use it because the brightness changes in existing energy-saving modes are too annoying, so this can be a practical compromise for a PC with a battery.
When the feature is launched, it will be an optionally enabled setting, but Microsoft has enabled the feature for some Canary channel testers.
Other changes
Privacy dialog design for application permissions now uses system dialogs instead of application-level popups, which dimms the screen around the popups and moves the popups to the center of the screen. File Explorer now also improves the decompression of archive files, "especially when you try to decompress ZIP files downloaded from the network and contain many small files."
Finally, PowerShell 2.0 has also been removed in the latest Dev channel build, and the text extractor in the screenshot tool is now accessible via the Win Shift T shortcut key.

The problem of slow booting can be solved by the following methods: 1. Check and disable unnecessary booting programs; 2. Turn off the quick boot function; 3. Update the driver and check disk health; 4. Adjust the number of processor cores (only for advanced users). For Windows 11 systems, first, the default self-start software such as QQ and WeChat are disabled through the task manager to improve the startup speed; if you use dual systems or old hardware, you can enter the power option to turn off the quick boot function; second, use the device manager to update the driver and run the chkdsk command to fix disk errors, and it is recommended to replace the mechanical hard disk with SSD; for multi-core CPU users, the kernel parameters can be adjusted through bcdedit and msconfig to optimize the startup efficiency. Most cases can be corrected by basic investigation

When Windows cannot detect a second monitor, first check whether the physical connection is normal, including power supply, cable plug-in and interface compatibility, and try to replace the cable or adapter; secondly, update or reinstall the graphics card driver through the Device Manager, and roll back the driver version if necessary; then manually click "Detection" in the display settings to identify the monitor to confirm whether it is correctly identified by the system; finally check whether the monitor input source is switched to the corresponding interface, and confirm whether the graphics card output port connected to the cable is correct.
