Google wants you to label AI-generated images used in Merchant Center
Jul 14, 2025 am 09:14 AMGoogle Merchant Center has confirmed that if you incorporate AI-generated images in your Merchant Center feed, you are required to disclose that the image was produced using generative AI.
In a statement, Google said, “If you’re using AI-generated images in Merchant Center, Google requires that you preserve any metadata tags which indicate that the image was created using generative AI in the original image file.”
How. Google emphasized that embedded metadata tags like trainedAlgorithmicMedia must not be removed from such images. The company further stated, “All AI-generated images must contain the IPTC DigitalSourceType trainedAlgorithmicMedia tag.” For more details, Google refers users to the IPTC photo metadata documentation.
Where it applies. According to Google, these requirements apply to the following image attributes in both Merchant Center Classic and Merchant Center Next:
- Image link[image_link]
- Additional image link[additional_image_link]
- Lifestyle image link[lifestyle_image_link]
Why we care. It’s likely that in the future, Google may enforce similar requirements across other Google Search platforms, beyond just Merchant Center or Google Images. At present, however, only the Merchant Center policies have been updated to specify that AI-generated images must include a disclosure within their image metadata.
