Use Genmoji to Create Custom Emoji That Work Just Like Regular Emoji in Messages, Notes, and More

May 31, 2025 am 11:26 AM

There are countless emoji characters available, but tracking down the perfect one can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. Want a red panda? You'll get a black-and-white version instead. Need a crying heart? Unfortunately, it's unavailable. Thanks to Apple Intelligence, locating the ideal emoji for every situation has become a possibility.

With the release of iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2 on December 11, your iPhone or iPad can leverage Apple Intelligence's new Image Playground tool to produce custom illustrated versions of nearly anything you can imagine. This tool is also accessible on macOS Sequoia 15.2. Besides Image Playground, you can craft custom-generated images using ChatGPT and transform basic drawings in Apple Notes into complete illustrations with Image Wand.

For personalized emoji creation, there's Genmoji. While standard emoji are represented as text via standardized Unicode characters, Genmoji are designed as inline image glyphs that align with the aesthetic of emoji. Any app with rich text support can integrate Genmoji, meaning you might be able to create and utilize Genmoji from your preferred third-party app in the future.

Requirements

Genmoji creation is restricted to iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2, launched December 11, on devices that support Apple Intelligence. macOS 15.2 compatibility will arrive in the coming months. These are the devices currently supported:

  • Any iPhone 16 model
  • iPhone 15 Pro
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max
  • iPad mini equipped with the A17 chip
  • Any iPad featuring an M-series chip

Additionally, Apple Intelligence features need to be enabled:

  • Go to Settings ? Apple Intelligence & Siri and ensure Apple Intelligence is turned on.
  • If you don't already have access, request early access to Apple's Image Creation tools and wait to be approved. You can request access via the Apple Intelligence & Siri settings, opening Image Playground, or trying to use Genmoji or Image Wand.

Compatibility

  • Genmoji can be viewed, saved, and used on any iPhone, iPad, or Mac running at least iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. Only the models and software mentioned above support creation.
  • You can create and use Genmoji solely in apps that support the feature, such as Messages, Notes, and Mail. Developers must integrate support into their apps using the NSAdaptiveImageGlyph API.
  • Genmoji received on older software or non-Apple devices will be delivered as standard image attachments.

Enter a Genmoji Prompt

To generate a new Genmoji with Apple Intelligence, go to a conversation in Messages, tap the message field to display the keyboard, and open your Emoji keyboard. This can also be done in a text field supporting Genmoji, like in Notes or Mail. Instantly, you'll observe that the previous "Search Emoji" field now reads "Describe an Emoji," accompanied by a New Genmoji button to create a new emoji.

Tap the New Genmoji button to open the Genmoji creator, which prompts you to "begin with a few words or a phrase that best captures your concept."

Alternatively, you can input the description for the emoji you desire in the "Describe an Emoji" field, then press the New Emoji button or "Create New Emoji" in the predictive text bar beneath the search field.

If you haven't entered a prompt yet, type in the description for the emoji you want, then tap "done" on the keyboard to submit it to Apple Intelligence. While it generates your new emoji, it will alert you that "certain descriptions might yield unexpected outcomes." In my examples, I used the prompts "smiling soccer ball with glasses" and "elephant with clocks for eyes."

Choose the Genmoji You Want

Similar to Apple Intelligence's Image Playground feature, Genmoji will produce several options you can swipe through to discover the one that best matches your vision. While browsing through them, you can provide feedback to Apple for each one to aid Apple Intelligence's improvement. After identifying your Genmoji, tap it or tap "Add" to load it into the message field.

Besides objects, locations, and themes, you can type the name of a person tagged in your Photos app to create a Genmoji resembling them. If you wish to pick a different person or modify how the person appears in the results, tap their name. Then, choose the person you prefer. Note that you can also opt for "Emoji" from the person selector to generate a more general character.

Once you select a person, Apple Intelligence will utilize different images of that person in the Photos app to offer you multiple options as starting points. Select one, then continue refining your Genmoji description until the desired Genmoji emerges.

Whenever you tap "Add" or a created Genmoji from the New Genmoji view, you'll automatically add the Genmoji to your emoji library on your iPhone or iPad. It'll also sync across your other Apple devices so you can use it on them. You can locate previously created Genmoji in various spots on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac:

  • Within the "Stickers" section of the Messages app. Tap the plus ( ) button in Messages, then Stickers.
  • Inside the Emoji keyboard under the "Stickers" or "Recents" section.
  • Search from within the Emoji keyboard using the same description you used to create the emoji. If you added extra captions to your Genmoji, those terms will be searchable as well.

Tapping your custom emoji will insert it into your message or a third-party app that supports Genmoji.

More Useful Genmoji Information

  • In Messages, send Genmoji as a sticker or reaction in a Tapback to respond to people's texts and media.
  • Touch and hold a Genmoji in Messages, then select "Emoji Details" from the menu. It will indicate that it's a Genmoji (versus a regular or Memoji sticker), its description (extra captions won't show here), and an option to download the Genmoji to your stickers (helpful for preserving Genmojis sent to you that you wish to keep).
  • Genmoji cannot be sent in the subject line of new chats in Messages.
  • You can copy Genmoji to your clipboard, but you won't be able to paste it into a text field unless that app supports Genmoji. In fields that support image pasting, the Genmoji may appear as an embedded image or attachment.

Third-party websites such as Gazelle, Swappa, etc. may provide higher quotations, but you need to pay attention to describing the real situation and avoiding the charging trap. 4. The core factors affecting value include model and storage capacity, equipment status, operator lock status, etc. Small problems may also affect the quotation. 5. If you pursue higher returns, you can choose to sell privately, but you need to weigh the time cost and transaction risks.
