Use Collapsible Sections to Conquer Clutter in Text-Heavy Notes on Your iPhone, iPad, or Mac
May 30, 2025 am 09:12 AMApple Notes continues to improve on both iPhone and iPad. Following last year's major update that introduced features like hyperlinks, linked notes, and block quotes, this year brings yet another fantastic way to personalize your notes further — collapsible sections.
To utilize collapsible and expandable sections, ensure your iPhone or iPad is updated to iOS 18 or iPadOS 18. For Mac users, macOS Sequoia 15 is required. These updates rolled out on September 16 for compatible devices.

Understanding Collapsible Sections
Collapsible sections are ideal for notes with extensive content, making it simpler to locate specific information quickly. All section headers — such as titles, headings, and subheadings — are collapsible, arranged hierarchically.
In a nested setup, collapsing a title hides everything beneath it until the next title, including body text, lists, block quotes, images, videos, attachments, tables, links, and drawings. Collapsing a heading hides everything under it until the next title or heading. Similarly, collapsing a subheading hides everything below it until the subsequent title, heading, or subheading.
Managing Sections on iOS and iPadOS
To include sections in your iOS and iPadOS 18 notes, press the Format button in the Notes toolbar, then input a title, heading, or subheading. Once section headers are set, tap the header until a down chevron appears on its left. Tapping the down chevron collapses the section; clicking the right chevron expands it.
Handling Sections on macOS
For macOS 15 notes, click the Format button in the Notes toolbar to insert a title, heading, or subheading. Alternatively, choose a section header from the "Format" option in the menu bar or use keyboard shortcuts:

Title Shift-Command-T Heading Shift-Command-H Subheading Shift-Command-J

After setting up sections, hover over the title, heading, or subheading to reveal the down chevron on its left. Click the down chevron to collapse the section; click the right chevron to expand it. Keyboard shortcuts or the "View" option in the menu bar can also be used to manage sections:

Expand Section Option-Command-?? Expand All Sections Option-Shift-Command-?? Collapse Section Option-Command-?? Collapse All Sections Option-Shift-Command-??

While managing sections on a Mac is straightforward, it remains user-friendly on iPhone and iPad.
