May 16, 2025 am 09:13 AMCreating professional-quality visuals with Apple's Image Wand in iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2 can be a game-changer, even for those lacking in artistic skills. This feature, an extension of Apple Intelligence's Image Playground, allows users to generate polished drawings in Apple Notes by simply describing what they want, selecting text for conversion, or circling a blank area to use nearby text as descriptors. Whether it's a quick project sketch or a detailed diagram, Image Wand simplifies the process with minimal effort required.

This guide will help you navigate using Image Wand on your iPhone or iPad. While an Apple Pencil can enhance your experience, using your fingertips and understanding the process is all you need.
Requirements
Image Wand is exclusive to iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2, which were released on December 11, and is supported on devices compatible with Apple Intelligence. Here's the list of compatible devices:
- Any iPhone 16 model
- iPhone 15 Pro
- iPhone 15 Pro Max
- iPad mini with A17 chip
- Any iPad with an M-series chip
Additionally, you must enable Apple Intelligence features:
- Go to Settings ? Apple Intelligence & Siri and ensure Apple Intelligence is activated.
- If you don't have access yet, request early access to Apple's Image Creation tools through the Apple Intelligence & Siri settings, Image Playground, or by attempting to use Genmoji or Image Wand.
Initially, Image Wand is only available in Apple Notes, but future updates may extend its functionality to apps like Pages, Keynote, or third-party applications.
For iPad users, an Apple Pencil can enhance the drawing experience, though it's not mandatory for using Image Wand. Consider purchasing one if you frequently sketch or draw on your iPad.

Using Text in Your Note to Create an Image
To have Image Wand generate an image based on the text around where you want it placed, follow these steps with the cursor at the desired location:
- Tap the cursor to bring up the contextual menu, then select "Add to Playground" (previously "Create Image").
- Or, tap the Attachments button in the toolbar, then choose "Image Playground" from the options.
- Alternatively, tap the Markup button in the toolbar, select the Image Wand icon from the Markup or Apple Pencil tool palette, and draw a circle around a blank area in the note with your finger or Apple Pencil.
You can also select specific text in your note and use the first two methods above to create images based solely on the selected text.
The Image Playground interface will appear, analyzing the surrounding text to extract keywords and phrases for image prompts. Shortly after, you'll see the first generated image. Swipe to view more options or adjust descriptors to refine the output.
To add more descriptors, tap the plus ( ) button next to the text field. You can also switch the style between Sketch, Illustration, and Animation from this menu.
Using a Sketch in Your Note to Create an Image
If you want Image Wand to enhance a sketch or drawing you've already made in your note, open the Markup tools, select the Image Wand icon from the Markup or Apple Pencil tool palette, and then circle the sketch or drawing with your finger or Apple Pencil.
Currently, you need to enter a descriptor in the text field and press the upload button to start the Image Playground's generation process. Future updates might eliminate the need for text input. Once the image appears, it will include your descriptor and the original sketch.
You can swipe through to see different generated images or modify descriptors to refine the results.
Tap the plus ( ) button next to the text field to add more descriptors. You can also switch between Sketch, Illustration, and Animation styles from this menu.
Updating Your Custom Generated Image
After inserting your chosen image into your note by tapping "Done," you can further customize it. Resize the image by dragging its corners, or tap it to access the contextual menu for options like deleting or duplicating. The More (???) button in the contextual menu offers additional features, such as "Remove Background," which attempts to transform your image into a sticker-like format.
The More menu also includes a "Recreate" option, which reopens the Image Playground to generate new images based on existing descriptions. This option is also available as an icon in the main contextual menu.
Your generated image will be within a drawing field, but you can convert it to a regular image attachment by holding and dragging it outside the drawing box to another part of the note. Once moved, it can no longer be edited with Image Playground.
As demonstrated, Apple Intelligence can significantly streamline tasks ranging from document editing to creating professional sketches. This feature showcases how you can utilize the built-in artificial intelligence in your devices to enhance productivity.
