Samsung DeX gets a fresh look as Android 16's desktop mode rolls out
Jul 31, 2025 am 12:40 AMSamsung has rolled out an updated DeX experience, leveraging Android 16’s built-in desktop mode. While the core functionality remains familiar, users of this desktop-style interface are now seeing several noticeable changes.
Originally introduced with the Galaxy S8 in 2017, Samsung DeX enables compatible Galaxy devices to connect to external displays and deliver a desktop-like environment. With the release of One UI 8 and Android 16, Samsung is now basing DeX on Google’s official desktop mode, which made its debut at I/O 2025.
Even though Android’s desktop mode is still in beta, Samsung’s implementation within One UI 8 seems more polished and user-ready. The refreshed DeX experience is currently accessible on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7. Early feedback indicates that while the fundamental layout of DeX remains consistent, there are clear visual and functional updates.

Visual updates include a redesigned Quick Panel, offering a more modern look. However, some navigation changes may take time to get used to. The dedicated DeX section in the Settings app has been removed and replaced with a broader "Connected display" option. Additionally, the “Exit DeX” button is no longer located in the app drawer.
Another key change involves the taskbar, which now syncs directly with the docked apps from the phone’s home screen—a shift that aligns with Google’s updates in Android 16 QPR1 and highlights deeper integration between Samsung’s DeX and the underlying Android platform.### Do you like the DeX redesign in Android 16?

Further refinements have also been observed: right-click context menus on the desktop and taskbar are now more limited, certain UI components remain visible during fullscreen video playback, and the option to pin apps directly into windows has been removed. While these adjustments may seem minor, they can impact users who rely on advanced customization in their DeX workflows.
Despite the removal of a few legacy features from earlier DeX versions, the new Android 16-powered DeX feels more stable and streamlined. When compared to Google’s native desktop mode, Samsung’s DeX still stands out as the more refined and feature-complete option. However, it continues to cater to a specialized audience, and for most DeX users, these changes won’t drastically alter their daily experience.
As more Galaxy smartphones and tablets transition to One UI 8 in the months ahead, it will be interesting to see whether Samsung extends this updated DeX experience to a wider range of devices or keeps it exclusive to its latest foldable models.
