How To Play Strands

The New York Times' Strands puzzle is an innovative twist on the traditional word search. Currently in beta, it will remain available only if enough players engage with it daily.

Each day presents a new challenge. You’ll be given a grid of letters measuring six by eight. The goal is to uncover words connected by a central theme, which you’ll receive a clue for. Once found, theme words stay highlighted in blue.

In addition, there's a special word known as the spangram that must be identified. This word reveals the connection among the other words and spans from one side of the board to the opposite. While theme words won't be proper nouns, the spangram might be. Upon finding it, it will be marked in yellow.

Keep your wits about you.

It's not often that we see seven words plus the spangram fit so neatly together. That’s about the maximum you can expect since spangrams tend to be fairly short, and squeezing in many four-letter words isn’t easy. I was able to get a perfect score without needing any hints because once I found the spangram, the rest came naturally. Though I’m not exactly sure what rayon is as a fabric, the others were straightforward. Something like part synthetic silk? Not entirely sure what that entails, but it works.
