ForbesToday’s NYT Strands Puzzle: Hints, Spangram And Answers For Monday, July 21stBy Erik KainNYT Strands Tuesday, July 22nd Guide
Tuesday has arrived—meaning we’re now just a few days from the final weekend of July. While many students are nearing the end of their summer break, the season itself still has plenty of steam left—the Autumnal Equinox isn’t until late September. Rain or shine, school or no school, there are always words to discover. Let’s dive into this puzzle!
How To Play Strands
Strands is a daily word game from The New York Times that puts your vocabulary and pattern-solving abilities to the test. Here's how it works:
Objective
Locate all hidden theme-related words in the grid. Each puzzle centers around a specific theme, and all the words you find will connect to it. Some themes are instantly clear, while others demand more thought. Typically, you'll need to locate between 5 and 9 words total.
The Spangram
One special word—the spangram—spans from one edge of the grid to another and directly reflects the theme. It’s essential for solving the puzzle, acting as the glue that holds all the other theme words together.
Finding Words
- Words must be at least four letters long.
- Letters must be adjacent (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) to form a valid word.
- You can change direction while tracing a word, but each tile can only be used once per word.
Below is an image of a completed Strands puzzle. The spangram appears in yellow:
Helpful Tips
- For every three non-theme words you find, you’ll receive a hint that reveals the starting letter of a theme word.
- Use these hints strategically to uncover harder words.
Finishing the Puzzle
Once you’ve found all theme words—including the spangram—you’ve won! Try today’s puzzle here.
Warning: Spoilers below.

Today’s Strands Breakdown
I began by searching for general pet store items like LEASH or BOWL, but soon realized the theme was much more focused: FISH-related gear. Though an AQUARIUM can technically house reptiles too, this puzzle centered on aquatic setups. Even without personal experience owning fish tanks, the connections became clear once I spotted a few key terms like TANK and FILTER.
