Basics of Toxicological Badges
Poisoning and recovery
Practical strategies
PEAK has many features, but it’s no surprise that it ’s not an accurate simulation of how to climb or survive under extreme conditions. This is especially evident on the toxicological badge, which basically requires you to intentionally suffer severe poisoning damage before using the items you collect during the climb to heal those injuries.
This guide helps players understand how to obtain this seemingly difficult badge, including its basics and some strategies to make the acquisition process easier.
Basics of Toxicological Badges
In PEAK, the toxicological badge is a sign of honor, arguably representing a moderately difficult challenge (for example, it is much harder than the foraging badge, but much easier than the challenge of actually reaching the peak). This badge is obtained by using a restorative item (such as an antidote) to cure a total of 200 poison damage.
The Toxicology Badge is an example that most players will not get unless they are specifically pursuing it, as it will take a lot of poisoning damage and also use items to heal these damage. Nevertheless, even novice players can get this badge relatively easily with the right item refresh.
After obtaining the Toxicology Badge, you can unlock the "Tooth" decorative items and earn an achievement while playing on the Steam platform.
If you plan to get this badge, it is usually best to complete the relevant tasks before completing the tropical areas. Of course, after that you still have a chance to take poison damage and find detoxification items, but the chances will be even more limited.
Poisoning and recovery
Poisoning damage appears as a purple icon and displays a skeleton mark on the top of the head, originating from several different ways, including:
- Toxic “foods” such as some fruits (color is important) and some toxic variants that can collect mushrooms
- Ticks, which will randomly attach to the character when you move around the tropical region and periodically cause poisoning damage until removed by other climbers (or more difficult to remove by yourself)
- A non-explosive variant of the strange tropical bulb that bursts out a cloud of poisonous gas, but doesn't push you back as violently as other species
- Toxic shrubs, appearing in tropical areas, can be easily identified by their purple markings
- The thorny vines also appear in tropical areas and will slightly push you away when touched.
Poisoning problems occur most frequently in tropical biomes, where most sources of poisoning are concentrated. Poisoning damage will disappear naturally over time, but natural recovery is ineffective against the toxicological badge. To obtain this badge, you need to heal a total of 200 poison damage through the item. Important items that can be used to treat poisoning include:
- Antidote
- Panacea
- Medicinal roots
- Medical package
There are two other items that can treat poisoning damage within a certain range: Fairy Lanterns and Healing Fungi, although it is not clear in the test whether these items can count to your total toxic healing amount (logically, these therapeutic sources may also be effective).
Pandora Bento Box can also treat poisoning, but the item is relatively rare and has a random effect, so it is difficult to rely on.
Remember to communicate with your teammates about the items you found and whether you are interested in getting the toxicological badge. Many players with toxicology badges will no longer use antidotes once they reach their goal, as the poison damage will naturally fade away, and the antidotes occupy the inventory, but if other players know you are still pursuing the badge, they may bring one for you, or at least tell you where to find it. Antidotes can really save time – it’s a valuable resource, but in reality, if you don’t pursue a toxicological badge, you’ll usually fill your backpack with better items.
Practical strategies
A toxicological badge is a relatively difficult badge to passively obtain, because it requires that two conditions be met at the same time:
- You have to bear relatively large amounts of poisoning damage, which is usually what people try to avoid.
- You must have items that can be used to heal poisoning damage.
In testing, the badge is first waiting for a good chance to acquire before trying to get it. More specifically, you should wait for that harder part to control - find the item that can detoxify - before trying to get the badge.
Once you have obtained items that can detoxify, you can deliberately poison yourself. This is most easily achieved in tropical areas, as the toxic shrubs and thorny vines can provide you with a controlled level of poisoning damage. After you have received about the maximum dose that the detoxification item you have can cure, retreat and use your item.
The item that best suits this purpose is obviously an antidote, but anything that can heal poison damage should theoretically work (the key is that you use items to heal the damage rather than just waiting for natural recovery). One obstacle you may encounter is that 200 points of poisoning damage looks quite a bit. While there is no easy way to track your health values, from the test, it seems that the toxicity progress bar will be obtained after healing about two full blood bars of poison damage (which makes sense too, as this means the maximum health is 100 HP).
If the backpack space is limited, you can also complete this badge in stages. While all damage must be cured in the same round, you can quickly poison yourself and use it immediately every time you find an antidote or other similar item. Just remember to count how much poisoning damage you can heal in total, so you don't get too deeply poisoned when looking for the next source of detoxification.
The minimum number of items required to achieve the necessary damage was not determined during the test, but the player who successfully obtained the badge ended up using a whole bottle of antidote and a portion of the second bottle of dosage. To minimize the amount of items you need, remember to maximize the amount of poisoning you cure. If you make a calculation mistake and take a little more damage than you can heal, it will still recover naturally.
