Having problems with your Pixel phone's lock screen after upgrading to Android 16? You're not alone
Jul 18, 2025 am 12:26 AM- Some Pixel owners are encountering Android 16 lock-screen problems
- Reports mention the screen being sluggish and non-responsive
- At this time, Google has not released any official guidance on the matter
Last month marked the beginning of the official Android 16 rollout, with the top-tier Pixel phones among the first to receive the update – yet it seems the new software is leading to lock-screen difficulties for a noticeable number of Pixel users.
Various issues have surfaced, according to reports from 9to5Google. These involve the lock screen failing to activate when tapped, delayed reactions when pressing the power button, fingerprint scanner malfunctions, and erratic brightness levels.
"I've been facing a major and annoying delay when trying to turn my phone on," comments one user on the Pixel Phone Help forums. "Frequently, I need to press the button multiple times before the device responds. This problem happens about once or twice every day."
In this specific case, there was a solution: entering Safe Mode (see here) followed by a normal reboot. If you're dealing with similar issues, this fix might help – but even with a potential solution available, it's clearly not something Google would want happening.
Trouble waking up
"Has anyone else faced problems where the screen doesn't wake up when tapping or using the lift-to-wake feature?" another Reddit user asked. "Also, hitting the power button results in a long delay before the screen turns on."
This user mentioned they were experiencing these issues on a Pixel 9 Pro XL, and had already reported the issue to Google. If you're running into Android 16-related troubles, contacting Google through their Help portal may be a good way to get support.
Currently, Google hasn't made any formal statements regarding the situation – possibly because the bugs being reported are numerous and diverse. The nature of these issues suggests that they could potentially be addressed in a future Android 16 update.
It's difficult to determine how widespread these issues are at the moment – some Pixel users are definitely affected, though not all. Even if only a few people are impacted, it’s still frustrating to see such bugs persisting after several months of beta testing.
