Nvidia To Resume China Chip Sales Again With RTX Pro

This marks the second shift in Nvidia’s ability to sell products within China. As was widely covered earlier this year, the company regained approval to supply chips to the Chinese market after Huang held a dinner meeting with Trump in the spring, reportedly part of a broader exchange where Nvidia pledged to invest in new server infrastructure domestically.

In the latest development, Trump appears to be promoting the company's significance to the U.S. economy and linking it to his broader export policy through a recent post:

"NVIDIA IS UP 47% SINCE TRUMP TARIFFS. USA is taking in Hundreds of Billions of Dollars in Tariffs," Trump shared on Truth Social. "COUNTRY IS NOW 'BACK.'"

Regarding market value, Huang has projected that the total size of China’s chip market stands around $50 billion, adding that a sales prohibition would cost Nvidia approximately $8 billion.

Nvidia’s Exportable Architecture

The current modification reportedly involves a different version of Nvidia’s chip than the H20 variant previously restricted from export to China by U.S. authorities.

The regulation targeting sales to China seems focused on curbing the level of performance capabilities available to the country—particularly related to memory capacity and overall processing power.

I asked ChatGPT what distinguishes the newly introduced “China chip,” and the model responded: “The China-specific version is based on the Blackwell RTX Pro 6000 but is less powerful compared to the standard edition — it utilizes GDDR7 memory rather than HBM and omits NVLink support.”

Such design choices are likely intended to align with the following restrictions outlined by U.S. regulators, as referenced by Connie Loizos at TechCrunch:

“Specific performance limits, such as total memory bandwidth capped at 1,400 gigabytes per second or input/output bandwidth limited to 1,100 GB per second.”

Moving Forward with China

Huang is also scheduled to appear at the International Supply Chain Expo in Beijing shortly after this announcement and may seek a meeting with China’s premier, Li Qiang.

It’s worth noting that actual shipments won’t begin immediately: the updated chip isn't expected to reach the Chinese market until September (or possibly later).

What does Huang say about selling into China?

Zijing Wu and Cheng Leng highlight this in a July 9 article for the Financial Times:

“At an event during the Computex tech conference in Taiwan in May, the CEO criticized U.S. export restrictions designed to limit China’s access to AI processors, calling them ‘a(chǎn) failure.’ He added that these policies had driven Chinese firms to speed up the development of their own AI technologies.”

RTX Pro Adoption

In other news, CoreWeave revealed plans to integrate the new chip into its cloud computing platform. As a major cloud provider, CoreWeave has drawn significant attention due to rapid expansion fueled by strategic partnerships like the one with OpenAI, and another with IBM, under which CoreWeave will provide compute resources for IBM's Granite AI models.

"CoreWeave is built to keep pace with innovation, and with the introduction of instances powered by the RTX PRO 6000, we’re again leading the way in delivering cutting-edge AI and graphics technology to the cloud,” stated CoreWeave CTO Peter Salanki in a public release.

As Nvidia approaches a monumental $4 trillion market valuation, the firm continues to operate across both sides of a rapidly globalizing tech landscape.

Throughout these developments, Nvidia shares have climbed significantly this month, nearly doubling since early spring figures.

U.S.-China trade dynamics remain a key influence on both tech economies. While tracking the swift evolution of AI models, it’s equally crucial to monitor hardware markets, along with environmental impacts from data centers and the societal implications of such rapid innovation. Stay tuned for further updates on these unfolding trends.
