How to Install a Lightweight Bodhi Linux Distro

Bodhi GNU/Linux is a distribution rooted in Ubuntu, specifically crafted for desktop computing, and celebrated for its sleek and efficient design. The core philosophy of this system is to offer a minimalistic base that users can enhance with their preferred applications.

The Base System contains only the essential applications, including the Thunar file manager, Chromium browser, Terminology terminal emulator, ePhoto, and leafpad. Lightweight apps can be quickly downloaded and installed using either Apt or AppCenter.

The standard version of Bodhi Gnu/Linux is tailored for Intel-compatible processors, while an alpha release for ARM processors (used in tablets) is based on Debian GNU/Linux. However, the ARM variant is no longer officially supported due to time constraints.

Built upon Ubuntu’s long-term support release, Bodhi delivers daily security patches for a duration of 5 years. Importantly, Bodhi does not offer short-term support releases. The system can be updated using the package manager or command line.

On May 12, 2021, Bodhi Linux 6.0 was released, based on the Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS (Focal Fossa) framework. We’ll now guide you through the process from booting to the Live environment and then the installation.

Installing Bodhi Linux 6.0

1. Visit the official Bodhi Linux website, download the appropriate version of Bodhi Linux 6.0.0 for your system, and create a bootable USB drive using Unetbootin or the dd command. Restart your system afterward.

2. Upon rebooting, the Bodhi Linux boot menu will appear.

4. Choose your desired language and click Continue.

8. Next, configure your software update preferences:

  • Download updates during the installation of Bodhi (default: selected).
  • Install third-party software updates for graphics and Wi-Fi hardware (default: not selected).

NOTE: For systems with limited specifications, it's advisable to uncheck the option “Download updates while Installing Bodhi”, as it increases the installer's memory usage.

9. Choose the installation type for Bodhi Linux:

  • If you're installing Bodhi as the sole operating system on your machine, select Erase disk and install Bodhi.
  • If another OS is detected, you’ll see the option to “install alongside…”. For example, Install Bodhi alongside Windows Boot Manager.
  • For full control over the installation destination, choose “Something else”.

I opted for Erase disk and install Bodhi.

10. Confirm the changes to be written to the disk: Regardless of your choice, you'll see this confirmation screen. Click Go Back if you’re unsure; otherwise, click Continue.

11. Select your time zone according to your geographical location.

12. Create a new user account by entering your name, computer name, username, and password. You may also choose to enable automatic login.

13. File copying will commence and may take some time depending on your system's performance. You can read the welcome message in the meantime.
