The Basics of the Foraging Badge
Berry Hunting
Some Quick Tips
PEAK isn't a simple game, but not every obstacle is as tough as scaling the peak it's named after. The Foraging Badge serves as an ideal early objective because you can acquire it fairly quickly and repeatedly once you've made it to the Tropics.
This guide will walk you through how to obtain this badge, with some advice to simplify the process.
The Basics of the Foraging Badge
To earn the Foraging Badge, you must consume five different types of berries during one expedition. These berries don’t have to be safe to eat, and—as we'll cover later—the list of acceptable foods includes some items that might not look like "berries" unless you read their names carefully.
This badge ranks among the simplest to achieve in the game, requiring little more than overcoming the first real hurdle: climbing through the Shore. Once you reach the Tropics, even if you fail to complete the climb for that biome, you should still be able to secure the badge without much trouble. If you're playing with others, getting this badge becomes even easier.
Earning the Foraging Badge rewards you with a tongue-sticking-out face animation for your character, and if you're on Steam, it also unlocks the corresponding achievement.
You likely won't need to actively pursue this badge by starting a run specifically for that purpose. Instead, aim for another badge—like Mycology—and just snack on any berries you come across along the way.
Berry Hunting
The following berries are confirmed to count toward earning this badge. Berries marked (Positive) provide beneficial effects when eaten, while those labeled (Poisonous) cause poison damage:
- Yellow Crispberry (Positive)
- Red Crispberry (Positive)
- Green Crispberry (Poisonous)
- Yellow Clusterberry (Positive)
- Red Clusterberry (Positive)
- Green Clusterberry (Poisonous)
- Black Clusterberry (Positive)
- Yellow Berrynana (Positive)
- Blue Berrynana (Positive)
- Pink Berrynana (Poisonous)
- Brown Berrynana (Positive)
- Yellow Kingberry (Poisonous)
- Green Kingberry (Poisonous)
- Purple Kingberry (Poisonous)
- Scorchberry (Unique)
- Eating a Scorchberry temporarily reduces stamina due to heat exposure. However, if you're suffering from the Cold debuff, this berry can actually help. So while it usually has a minor negative effect, it’s not always harmful.
- Orange Winterberry (Positive)
- Located in the Alpine biome, which is further into the game—by then, you’ve probably already found five other berries.
- Yellow Winterberry (Positive)
- Also found in the Alpine biome.
It remains unconfirmed whether the Napberry—which has special healing properties—counts toward the badge. Given its name, it probably does, but since the badge is so easy to get, it’s unlikely to matter.
Berries make for a solid food source and are especially crucial for obtaining the more challenging Naturalist Badge.
Some Quick Tips
Getting the Foraging Badge is something you can easily do passively on any successful run past the Shore. On the Shore, you’ll typically find Red and Green Crispberries, with Yellow Crispberries being less common but still available there. Eating a Green Crispberry isn’t too bad—it satisfies some hunger while giving a small amount of poison, which usually fades before becoming a major issue. All crispberries grow on bushes.
Once you move beyond the Shore and into the Tropics, you’ll encounter a wide variety of berries, making it very possible to complete the badge even if you didn’t eat any berries earlier. This area contains all types of Clusterberries, Berrynanas, Kingberries, and Scorchberries. Clusterberries can be harder to collect because they grow on large, poisonous vines, but the other berries are relatively easy to locate:
- Berrynanas: Found on vines, and usually stand out due to their bright colors.
- Kingberries: Grow on trees.
- Scorchberries: Found on bushes and are somewhat rare.
If you haven’t yet earned the badge but have reached the Alpine biome, you can look for the two types of Winterberries. Orange Winterberries grow on small trees and are easy to find. Yellow Winterberries are rarer, appearing only on top of capybara heads, which allow you to take them without harm. Each Alpine map has one hot spring where these animals appear, though it's generally easier to gather your berries elsewhere.
