Microsoft Teams just added a convenient new feature you can find in Slack
Jul 15, 2025 am 12:11 AMMicrosoft has announced a range of new updates for Teams, featuring a new threaded conversations tool that will streamline lengthy discussions for users.
In a blog post outlining the new features, Noga Ronen, senior product marketing manager for Microsoft Teams, stated that this new feature will be introduced in channels, aiming to make collaboration “more efficient and focused.”
With this feature, users will be able to reply directly to specific messages within channels, keeping separate discussions grouped together without disrupting the flow of general conversation.
“This maintains context and order, making it easier to stay updated, while enabling in-depth discussions,” Ronen explained.
“You can follow the threads that are most important to you, and when a key update or decision is made, you can send it back to the main conversation, ensuring everyone stays aligned without needing to go through every reply.”
As part of the update, users will also gain access to a ‘Followed Threads’ feature which “brings all of your followed conversations into one interactive list,” Ronen added.
This means Teams users can view all current threads and respond to messages through a single interface without manually navigating through channels.
Even better, once users are finished with a thread, they can unfollow it to stop receiving notifications. Additionally, users will only be included if they’ve explicitly chosen to follow a particular thread, or if they’ve started, replied to, or been mentioned in one.
“While posts are ideal for announcements and general updates, threads are better suited for dynamic, large-scale collaboration,” Ronen said.
“When creating a new channel, choose between threads or posts layout, and rest assured, this setting can be changed later without losing any data.”
Microsoft Teams finally catches up with Slack
If this all sounds familiar, you’re not mistaken. The new threaded conversations feature shares some similarities with Slack’s own threaded approach—though with some key differences.
While Slack allows users to respond to any individual post in any channel, Teams will only allow users to create posts or specific threads within a single channel.
Ronen noted that this will help reduce clutter in channels and prevent a cacophony of overlapping conversations between colleagues while still integrating well with the traditional post layout that users are accustomed to.
“The new threads layout complements the existing post layout. While posts are ideal for announcements and general updates, threads are more suitable for dynamic, large-scale collaboration,” Ronen explained.
“When creating a new channel, select between threads or posts layout, and don’t worry, this can be adjusted later without any loss of data,” she added.
“By setting up dedicated channels for each project, you can keep stakeholders, files, and updates all in one place—making teamwork more connected, transparent, and efficient.”
The threaded conversations feature is now available in public preview and can be activated by users within the app.
