The Sims 4: Enchanted By Nature - Natural Living, Explained
Jul 12, 2025 am 12:12 AMThe Sims 4: Enchanted By Nature introduces a new natural living skill. This is a ten-level skill which revolves around a Sim becoming better equipped to deal with being able to fulfill all their needs in the great outdoors.
The more a Sim uses the skill, the more efficiently they'll be able to survive in nature. Leveling up will add a handful of new interactions and abilities as well as make basic skills more efficient. Here's how your Sim can truly live off the grid.
What Is The Difference Between Natural Living And Off-The-Grid?
Off-the-grid and natural living actually work in conjunction with each other. Off-the-grid is a lot challenge, which means your lot is disconnected from utilities and unable to access power or water.
You'll have no utility bills, but you'll be unable to use almost all electronics and will also find that plumbing options are heavily restricted.
How To Increase Natural Living SkillYou can increase your natural living skill by doing any activities marked by the symbol of a Sim leaning against a tree. These are:
- Forage - Can be done on grass, dirt or sand in any area by left-clicking the ground and selecting Forage for... or Forage Here.
- Sleep On The Ground - Can be done in most indoor or outdoor areas anywhere there is space. Just left-click on the ground and choose Sleep Here.
- Bathe - This can be done in open water such as ponds, rivers and sea shores. You need water of wading depth.
- Summon a Privy Bush (Requires Level Two Natural Living Skill) - Can be done in most open areas by left-clicking the ground and then clicking Summon a Privy Bush. Once summoned, your Sim will use the bush before it vanishes.
- Talk To Nature (Requires Level Five Natural Living Skill) - Click on plants and select Talk To Nature to replenish your social skill.
- Meditate in Nature - (Requires Level Seven Natural Living Skill) Again, this can be done in most open outdoor spaces. Left-click the ground and select Meditate in Nature.
Sims can also read the three Natural Living Skill books. Book one covers levels 1-3, book two can be read at levels 4-6 and book three goes from level 7-10.
Sims can also research nature on a computer by selecting More Choices > Web > More Choices > Research > Research Natural Living.
Natural Living Skill Levels
Level One
Sims can sleep on the ground indoors or outdoors, but it will only replenish energy very slowly and will also reduce hygiene. They can also bathe in any water shallow enough for wading. This includes ponds, rivers, and shorelines. Any Sim in Everdew can also take a sponge bath at the Fairy Hub, even if they aren't a fairy.
Sims can forage on any grass, dirt or sand. Items will vary slightly based on skill level and area. Any edible food gained from harvesting or foraging will help Sims fulfill their hunger needs and gain a small amount of fun.
Level TwoSims can now summon a privy bush anywhere outdoors where you can forage. This allows them to empty their bladder. At this level, it will reduce hygiene when used.
Sims can also eat any raw fish they have caught without a need to cook it first. If you have Simoleons, you can also buy raw fish from the Captain's Quarters in the Coast of Adhmor neighborhood.
Level Three
Sims can choose to forage for plants at this level, and any harvestable foods they eat will better replenish their hunger.
When sleeping on the floor, they will also find that they replenish energy a little quicker, and lose hygiene a little slower.
Level Four
Sims using the privy bush will lose less hygiene and stay cleaner at level four. They'll also find bathing in natural water fun, although it can still be uncomfortable occasionally.
Napping on benches now replenishes more energy than before, so seek out the benches scattered across Innisgreen to take advantage.
Level Five
Your Sim can now eat any frogs they catch, should they be that way inclined. They can also forage for collectibles to make some extra cash.
Bathing in nature now leaves your Sim feeling cleaner, faster and stops the negative moodlets associated with it. Finally, the new Talk To Nature ability lets your Sim regenerate social needs by chatting with nature itself.
Level Six
Sims are considered conditioned to the elements at this level. This means they no longer feel temperature effects from extreme heat or cold and can sleep or bathe in the rain or snow. Sleeping outdoors can even help restore balance at this level.
Level SevenThe privy bush will no longer deplete your Sim's hygiene at all, and they'll find eating harvestable foods they foraged replenishes fun as well as hunger.
The new Meditate In Nature skill, activated by clicking on the ground, also generates fun. However, not that efficiently just yet. There are still a couple of levels of skill to go.
Level Eight
Sims are thriving now and all harvestable foods and raw fish will properly satisfy hunger needs. Sims at this level can eat frogs, raw fish, and any edible fruit, vegetable or herb which has been harvested, or foraged for.
Level Nine
Frogs will now satisfy hunger as well, and talking to nature fulfills social needs much faster.
Level TenAll needs are now efficiently met in nature. Bathing and sleeping also have a greater chance to restore balance. Anything harvestable also satisfies a large amount of hunger.
Any Sim at this maximum level will also have a dramatically lowered chance of being scared of the dark, or scared of swimming.
Tips For Natural Living
There are a few things you can do that will make your life easier when leveling your Natural Living skill.
- The Watering Hole in Everdew is a great starter lot. It has a pond you can bathe in, plenty of grass to forage in, and you can sleep on the lot as well. Fairies can also use the nearby fairy house for their occult-specific energy needs.
- Foraging will give you everything you need. You'll get plenty of food as well as items to sell. You can be completely self-sufficient very quickly.
- If you have temperature effects enabled, make sure to stay inside a public building if harsh weather appears.
- If you struggle with social needs, take the Plant Lover trait, which enables you to socialize with plants without needing to level a skill first.
- Buying a tent can also help if you want to avoid harsh weather without hiding in public buildings.
- Beware of winter. Ice will freeze the outdoor ponds, rendering you unable to bathe. Luckily, you can still take a sponge bath at the Fairy Hub, which is in easy reach if you are at The Watering Hole lot.
