Dune: Awakening is, technically speaking, an MMO. That is, it's designed from the ground up to be played with other people, possibly with an entire guild at your back helping you farm resources, get the proper gear, and so much more. But if you're more of a solo player, there are ways to work around this.
The journey may prove tougher in some spots, but there are some shortcuts and things you can exploit in order to make your solo gameplay experience more enjoyable. If you're jumping into Dune: Awakening for the first time and wondering how to play solo, here's what you need to know.
Should You Play Solo?
When diving into Dune: Awakening, the first thing you should ask yourself is if you even want to play solo. It can be extremely fun to play with a guild, sharing resources and completing quests in tandem.
However, if you're considering playing solo, here are some things to consider about playing solo:
- Sub-Fief Distribution - When playing solo, you will have a cap on three sub-fiefs, and won't necessarily have access to any more. This is something worth considering when choosing to play solo.
- Resource Harvesting - You'll have to face that it will take a lot longer to gather resources when playing solo.
- Solo Quests - Quests can be completed by party members. But when you play solo, you'll obviously have to do these all yourself.
- Skill Trees & Class Builds - Because you're the only person you can rely on in terms of combat, you'll need to diversify your skill tree and class build immensely.
If you are interested in taking the road less traveled, and you want to be a one-person show, consider the above before choosing to play solo.
However, if the above sounds fun to you, then playing solo can prove to be an immensely rewarding challenge.
What Class Should You Play Solo?In Dune: Awakening, there are four central classes you can choose from:
- Bene Gesserit
- Swordsman
- Trooper
- Mentat
While all of these classes are viable for playing solo, there are two that are most beneficial for solo players:
Starting Solo Class |
Why You Should Play |
---|---|
Trooper |
Gunplay is just extremely important in Dune: Awakening. So, early on, it's helpful if you start as a Trooper to improve these skills. |
Bene Gesserit |
The Bene Gesserit class has a lot of great skills for crowd control and taking out enemies, as well as one ability you can use as a sort of fast-travel early on. |
Completing The Tutorial Solo
The first thing you'll want to do when playing solo is speed through the tutorial as fast as possible. Here are some things you can do when you first arrive in the South Hagga Basin to finish the tutorial quickly.
Tutorial Step |
Details |
---|---|
Construct A Central Sub-Fief |
The most important thing you can do early on in the South Hagga Basin is to construct a sub-fief very centrally to reduce travel time. |
Don't Get Distracted |
Dune: Awakening is a very big game, and it's easy to get distracted. |
Gather As Many Resources As Possible |
As you traverse between the core missions of the tutorial, try to gather as many resources as you can. |
Your goal in the tutorial is to construct a sandbike, which will give you access to the Vermillius Gap, allowing the rest of the game to open up.
Focus on the following resources to complete this mission sooner rather than later:
- Copper
- Particle Capacitors
- Advanced Servoks
The more of these you can gather, the faster you'll be able to create a Sandbike and leave the tutorial area.
How To Play SoloOnce you've completed the tutorial and are set free on Arrakis, your journey will begin in earnest. While you can go anywhere and pursue whatever mission you like, there are some elements of gameplay you'll want to focus on first when playing solo.
Create Two Advanced Sub-Fiefs
As soon as you are able, construct two advanced sub-fiefs at a decent distance from one another. This is helpful for a variety of reasons.
- Cuts down on traversal time
- Allows for more storage
- Can refine more resources
When you have a guild, it's easy to gain a lot of refined resources quickly, store items, and find break points in your journey across the desert. However, if you're playing solo, you'll need to do this yourself.
Having more sub-fiefs is helpful in this regard. You can also create a third basic sub-fief if you want, but this is far less helpful.
Focused Resource HarvestingIt's really easy to get sidetracked in Dune: Awakening. That's why, when it comes to resource harvesting, try to stay focused on collecting one resource at a time.
There are a ton of areas on the map that focus just on one particular resource. Make a plan to seek out whatever specific resource you need, pack the right equipment (as light as possible), and head out to harvest.
Completing Quests SoloAs mentioned, you can complete quests with party members in Dune: Awakening, or even have them complete it for you.
This means that you can easily tear through entire questlines far quicker with a guild than you can solo. However, if you want to play solo, there are some quests you'll want to prioritize and ways to prepare for them.
- Trainer Quests - Focus on finding and completing trainer quests so that you can diversify your class build (more on this below).
- Solari-Based Contracts - Because you'll be responsible for paying your own taxes, you're going to want to pick up contracts whenever you stop at a trade outpost. Completing these will help make sure you have plenty of money at your disposal.
- Find the Fremen - Try to focus on completing the Trials of Aql as fast as you can, as this gives you to so many helpful resources like the Stilltent and the Thumper.
Diversify Your Skill Tree
As alluded to above, you're going to want to find and seek out the Trainers for each class so that you can diversify your build.
Since you're only relying on yourself, you'll want to make sure you have access to various skills so you can tailor your build to each individual quest or resource you're harvesting.
Here are some helpful links to locations for class trainers. Prioritize these quests as soon as you find them.
- Swordsman Trainer
- Trooper Trainer
- Bene Gesserit Trainer
- Mentat Trainer
- Planetologist Trainer
Those are the tips and tricks you need to know to play Dune: Awakening solo! Remember, it's no failing if you occasionally get help from a guild, but playing solo can prove to be a great challenge for expert players.
