What makes Peak such an enjoyable experience is the level of challenge it presents. It becomes even more entertaining when playing with friends, as the tougher levels can lead to some truly amusing situations. The climbing game features various difficulty levels, each introducing unique modifiers that significantly increase the challenge of your adventure.
This variety also enhances replayability, as you can experiment with different climbing strategies each time. However, understanding the modifiers in advance can save you a lot of frustration and help you better plan each climb. This guide will explain each of Peak's difficulty level sashes and how to unlock them.
All Difficulty Level Sashes, Explained
There are nine total levels available in Peak. As you progress through them, the challenges become increasingly difficult due to specific buffs that work against you.
When you first start the game, only two difficulty levels will be available:
- Tenderfoot: This is the easiest setting in Peak. There’s no time limit, your stamina depletes at a slower rate, and hunger has a reduced effect on your performance. Playing on this difficulty is ideal for learning the game mechanics.
- Peak: Regarded as the standard (or default) difficulty. Everything here is well-balanced, meaning your stamina and hunger decrease at a normal pace.
Once you've mastered these, you'll gain access to additional levels known as Ascents. However, unlocking each of these requires meeting certain conditions.
How To Unlock Each Ascent Difficulty
After completing the default difficulty in Peak, you’ll be able to attempt the first Ascent, which can be accessed via the departure booth located in the main lobby.
To unlock subsequent Ascents, you must complete the prior one. For example, after finishing Ascent 1, Ascent 2 becomes available, and so on until you reach Ascent 7.
Each Ascent includes all the previous modifiers along with its own new challenge. So, if you're playing on Ascent 2, you'll face both its modifier and the one from Ascent 1.
- Ascent 1: In this level, fall damage is amplified. You need to be extra careful with every move since even minor mistakes can cost you dearly.
- Ascent 2: While climbing, hunger increases faster, which in turn reduces your available stamina. Managing your food supply becomes critical at this stage.
- Ascent 3: Everything feels much heavier, which, like hunger, also limits how much stamina you have available.
- Ascent 4: Unlike other levels where flares needed for escape are found at the top of the final biome, here they may appear on the shore or elsewhere in the world. Failing to locate them means you won't complete this Ascent.
- Ascent 5: During this Ascent, nights are significantly colder, causing your stamina to drain at an accelerated rate. Planning your route ahead could mean the difference between survival and failure.
- Ascent 6: Stamina management is key here, as it depletes almost instantly. Using tools like the rope more frequently can help reduce energy expenditure.
- Ascent 7: This final difficulty introduces Permadeath, meaning once you die, you cannot be revived. If you're playing in multiplayer, though, you can spectate after your character dies.
It should be noted that in Ascent 7, you can still revive fallen teammates, but Permadeath applies only to your own death.
