“I’ve made the difficult decision to step away from my creative involvement in The Last of Us on HBO. With work completed on season two and before any meaningful work begins on season three, now is the right time for me to shift my full attention to Naughty Dog and its upcoming projects, including writing and directing our ambitious next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, as well as fulfilling my duties as studio head and head of creative,” Druckmann said in a statement to The Ankler regarding his choice, which he intended to communicate to Naughty Dog employees on Wednesday.

“Co-creating the show has been one of the highlights of my career. It’s been an honor to collaborate with Craig Mazin to executive produce, direct, and write across the past two seasons. I’m incredibly grateful for the thoughtful and dedicated approach the talented cast and crew brought to adapting The Last of Us Part I and their ongoing adaptation of The Last of Us Part II. I look forward to HBO and PlayStation Productions continuing Ellie and Abby’s journey in the next season.”

While it’s understandable that Druckmann must refocus his efforts on the massive AAA title Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, this places the Emmy-winning HBO series in a precarious position, especially considering how inconsistent Mazin has been when handling the source material and characters. Mazin himself has mentioned that it will take at least two more seasons to fully cover The Last of Us Part II. There are no known creative disagreements between them—this appears to be simply due to Druckmann’s obligations at Naughty Dog.

The Last of Us is about to enter a challenging new phase, where it won’t return for at least two years and will do so without the main cast, centering instead on the newly introduced character of Abby for what will likely be most of season 3. This mirrors the structure of the game, but given the differences between television and gaming formats and the long gaps between seasons, this poses a significant risk. Following that, another season is expected to arrive another 2-2.5 years after that.

This isn’t ideal news. Not that Mazin can’t deliver quality seasons on his own, but Druckmann was clearly integral to the show's success, particularly during season 1 and in the episodes he directed and wrote during season 2. From here on out, things appear uncertain.
