There are many parts to Death Stranding 2: On The Beach. Most of those parts involve a lot of walking and trying your absolute best not to fall. And often times failing. However, more than just walking and delivering cargo, Sam will sometimes come up against a threat he can't just avoid. And sometimes, it's a good old-fashioned boss fight.
The first boss in Death Stranding 2 is the Giant BT, which is essentially a massive head and spinal cord. If you've played the original Death Stranding, this won't be entirely foreign to you, though it may still pose a challenge if you’ve avoided combat or firearms so far. Here are some useful tips for defeating it.
When Do You Encounter The Giant BT Boss Fight?
As the first boss in the game, the Giant BT appears very early on. In fact, it’s one of the last things you’ll do in Mexico before heading out. After reaching the Western Observatory, there’s a short cutscene with Deadman where he says he’ll continue the conversation later.
Immediately after that, you’ll receive a notification about a large BT nearby. This is labeled as Main Order No. 6, so keep that in mind to prepare accordingly. As soon as you walk toward the hill crest outside the observatory, the boss battle begins. Be sure to save your progress and have all your gear ready before leaving the building entirely.
Recommended Gear To Bring
Since this is a boss fight, there’s no way around it—you have to face it head-on. It's a BT much larger than any you’ve encountered so far. As it's a BT, standard weapons won’t be effective, so plan your loadout carefully.
With how movement works in Death Stranding 2, dodging every attack might be impossible, but you can reduce the damage taken. For starters, travel light. The lighter Sam is, the quicker and more agile he becomes, allowing better evasion. Only carry what’s necessary.
Among the essentials, Blood Grenades are crucial, dealing the most damage to the boss. After completing the previous Main Order, you should also have access to crafting an MP Assault Rifle. While not as powerful as Blood Grenades, it provides steady damage output—bring at least one or two.
Next, bring along Blood Bags. You will take hits, so extra health is vital. They're lightweight and stored in a dedicated pouch, so pack as many as you can.
Beyond that, leave everything else behind, especially anything you don’t want damaged. Extra cargo, non-lethal weapons, tools, and other items can be safely stored in your private locker at the Western Observatory. Once you’ve secured your valuables and equipped yourself properly, you’re ready to enter the fight.
How To Defeat The Giant BT
The Giant BT isn’t overly complicated, though fighting BTs is vastly different from human enemies. Not only do they require special weapons and tactics, but they can also pull you into unique arenas, giving them the upper hand. For this boss, you’ll be fighting in a vast tar pit littered with floating debris and submerged vehicles. The BT can swim beneath the surface to reposition, so always keep an eye on its movements.
Additionally, moving through tar slows you down, so make each step count—don’t try to move too far at once, as the Giant BT can easily intercept you.
Moveset
In terms of attacks, the Giant BT prefers ranged assaults, though it has close-range moves too. Here’s a quick breakdown:
- Tentacle Swipe - Tentacles extending from its head swipe at you, either individually or in unison.
- Electrify Tar - The BT inserts its tentacles into the tar, briefly electrifying the surrounding area.
- Jaw Swipe - If you get too close, the BT opens its jaw in two halves and strikes at you with both.
- Vacuum Suction - Positioned near the edge of the arena, the BT starts sucking in the environment, removing debris and even the helper Sam clones. Being caught results in a voidout, restarting the battle.
- Vacuum Release - At any point after Vacuum Suction, the BT releases whatever it has absorbed in a violent wave across the battlefield.
- Debris Flip - The BT grabs terrain pieces, often the one you’re standing on, and flips them to knock you into the tar.
- Tar Spit - From a distance, the BT spits a wide arc of tar at you, knocking Sam back.
Most of these attacks can be evaded by staying mobile and moving between debris pieces when possible. However, the Vacuum attacks are particularly dangerous. For Vacuum Suction, you can stand on debris since it gets pulled in slowly, giving you time to aim and throw a Blood Grenade. Hitting the mouth stops the attack instantly.
Strengths And Weaknesses
The Giant BT is durable, and its massive health bar means it won’t go down quickly, especially with the limited arsenal available. Still, targeting weak points helps speed things up.
As a BT, it’s immune to regular bullets and rubber rounds. Only MP ammunition can harm it, making Blood Grenades your top choice during the fight. These grenades can interrupt the BT’s actions and deliver heavy damage.
During the battle, pure white versions of Sam will rise from the tar offering extra supplies. Grab these whenever you run low and discard empty weapons.
Still, you'll likely rely on the MP Assault Rifle for consistent damage. Use it alongside Blood Grenades. Bullets fired through blood deal extra damage to BTs, especially when using MP rounds.
However, the Giant BT can easily reposition and destabilize or remove the debris you're standing on. Avoid lingering on one piece for too long—keep shifting positions to stay mobile and responsive to incoming attacks.
The main weak point is the open part of its face. Aim your attacks here for maximum effect, although its constant movement makes precise grenade throws difficult from afar.
