Delta Camera, an app that mimics the black-and-white photo aesthetic of Nintendo's vintage Game Boy Camera, is currently in closed beta testing. A full launch is expected later this year, but beta access can be obtained by supporting the developer’s Patreon.
The original Game Boy Camera debuted in 1998 and was once considered the world’s smallest digital camera available to consumers. It wasn't known for high-quality imaging, capturing photos at a resolution of 256x224 with only four gray tones. Despite its limitations, it has retained a nostalgic appeal, especially among YouTubers and hobbyists.
Delta Camera recreates that low-resolution monochrome look while adding modern controls like manual brightness, contrast, and exposure settings. The app supports zoom functionality, works with the Camera Control slider on newer iPhones, and includes extras such as panorama mode. Notably, its interface closely resembles the one Nintendo introduced nearly three decades ago.
Introducing our new app — Delta Camera ? A stand-alone app dedicated to taking Game Boy Camera photos with features you'd expect from a modern camera app ? Manual exposure/zoom ? Camera Control support Coming later this year, but available NOW in beta for all Patrons patreon.com/posts/introd...— AltStore (@altstore.io) 2025-06-26T14:22:59.652Z
If the name "Delta Camera" rings a bell, it's because it was developed by Riley Testut, who also created Delta Emulator—an app that allows users to play classic Nintendo games on iOS devices. Delta Emulator was among the first retro gaming emulators to appear on the iPhone after Apple updated its App Store rules in 2024. It's also a key app offered through AltStore, a third-party app distribution platform available in the European Union.
It's worth noting that the original Game Boy Camera could print images using the Game Boy Printer, which relied on thermal paper instead of ink cartridges. With Delta Camera and a Zink printer—which operates similarly—you could recreate that experience, if only for fun.
However, unlike the original device, Delta Camera does not include any built-in mini-games. While today's users may not miss them, these mini-games were a signature feature of the original Game Boy Camera.
The Delta Camera app will be widely released later this year, but beta access is available now by subscribing to the Riley Shane Patreon for a minimum of $3 per month.
