Google Chrome Is Ditching More Old Android Devices

Jun 29, 2025 am 12:53 AM

  • Starting this August, Google Chrome will only support Android 10.0 or higher.
  • Older Android devices may stop receiving updates, increasing the risk of security issues.
  • Users are advised to upgrade to Android 10 or consider replacing older devices.

If you're still using an older Android smartphone or tablet, here's some potentially unwelcome news. Certain models running outdated software will lose access to Google Chrome later this summer. Google has recently announced that Chrome will require Android 10.0 or above starting in August.

Many Android phones and tablets still run on outdated systems for various reasons. Manufacturers often fail to provide sufficient updates, carriers may abandon support, and so on. Eventually, though, these devices become too outdated for modern technology. Google made a similar decision back in 2023, discontinuing support for Android 7.0 Nougat from 2016.

As reported by 9to5Google and noted on a support page, Chrome will require Android 10 or newer beginning in August. This means devices running Android 8.0 Oreo (released in 2017) or Android 9 Pie will no longer be supported. The change will take effect once Chrome 139 for Android is released, which is expected within the first 7–10 days of August.

Instead of throwing it away.

7 According to Google's support documentation: "Chrome 138 will be the final version of Chrome compatible with Android 8.0 (Oreo) and Android 9.0 (Pie). Chrome 139 (provisionally scheduled for release on August 5th, 2025) will be the first version requiring Android 10.0 or newer. To continue receiving future Chrome updates, your device must be running Android 10.0 or later. Older versions of Chrome will still function, but no additional updates will be issued for those operating systems."

So what does this mean for users still clinging to an old Android phone or tablet? Not much right away, but over time, updates, support, and compatibility will gradually diminish. Initially, Google Chrome will continue functioning normally on your device, but you'll face growing security risks.

In the following months, certain websites might not load properly, display content incorrectly, or eventually stop working altogether. You may encounter increasing disruptions and bugs as time goes on, but for now, the browser will work fine—just without any new features or security updates.

While missing out on new features isn't critical, the absence of security patches poses a serious threat and leaves your device exposed while browsing online. Therefore, we recommend upgrading any older devices to Android 10 if possible. If that's not an option, you might want to think about replacing your old device. Outdated phones and tablets can be recycled, or repurposed into dashboard clocks, smart home displays, or other useful tools.
