This isn’t new for the show, but it happens so frequently that it borders on self-parody. The actors are undeniably good, but these scenes feel like they’re crafted solely to win Emmys. Carmy and Sydney have a deep talk. Carmy and his mom do the same. Then Carmy and Ritchie. Then Carmy and Claire. Then Carmy, Sydney, and Ritchie in the finale. Most of these involve tears. Pair any two (or three) characters from the cast, and you’ve covered nearly half the season.

Meanwhile, the actual restaurant storyline takes a back seat (no pun intended). Tina spends the whole season trying to create a pasta dish that can be made in under three minutes. Marcus drags his feet on desserts until his pastry-making pal Will Poulter comes back, and then he inexplicably wins a best young chef award. Sydney pretends she might leave The Bear for eight episodes, despite us all knowing she won’t. The most intriguing plotline was Ebraheim quietly working behind the scenes to save the restaurant by growing the beef sandwich business — only for that arc to be abruptly cut off by the season’s cliffhanger ending.

There were fewer screaming kitchen fights this time, which I welcomed. Still, watching Carmy have eight variations of the same conversation — “I don’t know how to exist, I don’t know who I am, and I hurt you” — becomes exhausting. We've been going through this cycle for years now.

I believe The Bear deserves a season 5 because there's no way to wrap things up after that season 4 finale. But the creative team needs to refocus — less time on tear-filled monologues aimed at awards shows and more attention on advancing the actual story and helping these characters move forward.
