Key Tech Firms Unite As Google Donates A2A To Linux Foundation
Jun 26, 2025 am 11:07 AMThe move tackles a core challenge for enterprise technology leaders: how to deploy AI agents capable of collaborating across platforms without needing custom integrations for every vendor. Present AI implementations in enterprises often result in siloed systems that fail to share information or coordinate tasks, limiting the automation benefits that justify AI investments.
Technical Foundation Enables Cross-Platform Agent Communication
The a2a protocol functions as a communication layer that enables AI agents to identify each other’s capabilities, securely exchange data, and coordinate complex operations regardless of their underlying infrastructure. The system uses JSON-RPC 2.0 over HTTP to ensure standardized communication, while server-sent events allow real-time streaming between agents.
Agent discovery is facilitated through “Agent Cards,” which act like digital business cards containing capability descriptions and connection details. When an agent needs to perform a task requiring specific expertise, it can query available agents, assess their capabilities, and establish secure communication channels automatically.
The protocol supports both synchronous request-response interactions and asynchronous workflows, making it suitable for enterprise environments where certain processes may require human approval or span multiple days. Authentication features ensure only authorized agents can access specific functions, while also maintaining audit trails to meet compliance requirements.
Amazon Web Services has already demonstrated this in practice by building tools that expose Bedrock agents via a2a endpoints. This allows AWS-based enterprises to make their AI agents accessible to those operating on other platforms, achieving the level of interoperability essential for modern enterprise architectures.
Market Convergence Accelerates Standards Adoption
The announcement from the Linux Foundation reflects the merging of previously competing methods for agent interoperability. More than 100 tech companies now back the a2a protocol, growing from the original 50 partners when Google introduced the specification in April.
Microsoft has incorporated a2a support into Azure AI Foundry and enabled a2a agent invocation through Copilot Studio. This integration allows enterprises invested in Microsoft's AI ecosystem to engage in multi-vendor agent workflows without replacing existing infrastructure.
Salesforce contributed the concept of Agent Cards, which became a cornerstone of a2a’s capability discovery mechanism. The company views agent interoperability as crucial for achieving what it calls “Level 4 multi-agent orchestration,” where specialized agents collaborate seamlessly across enterprise systems.
This convergence has significant implications for Cisco’s AGNTCY initiative, which has been developing infrastructure for the so-called “Internet of Agents.” Instead of positioning AGNTCY as a rival standard, Cisco is embedding a2a support directly into its core components such as Directory, Identity, SLIM Messaging, and Observability frameworks. This shift turns AGNTCY from a potential alternative into a complementary platform that enhances a2a’s functionality.
Strategic Implications for Technology Decision Makers
The governance model provided by the Linux Foundation ensures vendor neutrality, addressing enterprise concerns about being locked into proprietary ecosystems. Technology leaders can confidently invest in a2a-enabled solutions knowing that the protocol will evolve through community-driven development rather than controlled by a single vendor.
Standardization opens new avenues for enterprises to adopt modular AI strategies, where agents from different vendors can work together on complex tasks. For instance, a customer service workflow might involve Salesforce agents handling CRM interactions, ServiceNow agents managing incidents, and AWS agents performing data analysis—all coordinated through a2a protocols.
However, successful deployment requires thoughtful architectural planning. Enterprises must establish agent governance policies, implement monitoring tools, and define inter-agent data-sharing rules before launching production environments. While the protocol provides the technical foundation, organizational preparedness ultimately determines success.
Technology leaders should assess current integration capabilities and security postures before embracing multi-agent architectures. Although a2a reduces technical barriers to agent collaboration, it does not eliminate the need for strong data governance, identity management, and regulatory compliance measures essential for enterprise AI deployments.
