Obviously, major spoilers ahead, so if you haven’t watched the episode yet, consider yourself warned.

I waited on covering the last few episodes because it was revealed that Lalah and her Elmeth had “crossed over” into this universe.

Since I wasn’t sure where things were headed, I wanted to see the full arc before putting my thoughts together.

While the earlier episodes were mostly cut-and-dry monster-of-the-week stories, they were largely self-contained. The more recent episodes, however, have been quite different.

To summarize, we get various sinister plots by the Zabis, a brand new Newtype-powered super weapon, and the revelation that Lalah’s sorrow created a multiverse.

The sorrow in question stems from Amuro killing Char in the original Mobile Suit Gundam.

Except, in the original Mobile Suit Gundam, Amuro kills Lalah as she shields Char.

This moment, and the Newtype connection between Amuro and Lalah—suggesting they are soulmates—is the root of the ongoing enmity between Amuro and Char throughout their story, from Zeta Gundam to Char’s Counterattack.

In that narrative, Char refuses to accept that Lalah loves Amuro, while Amuro can’t move past having killed his soulmate.

It’s one of the more tragic elements of the original Mobile Suit Gundam, but here, it didn’t happen that way.

Instead, Char dies, and in her anguish, Lalah fractures the universe to bring him back. This fracture sends the Elmeth across multiple timelines, with some Mobile Suit Variation-style designs shown to illustrate that journey.

But it turns out that Shuji is somewhat the spirit or will of Amuro, and has been pursuing Lalah to end her suffering by ending her life. Doing so would erase the GQuuuuuuX timeline entirely.

This is where things become intriguing, as Machu and Nyaan want to save both Shuji and Lalah. Challia also realizes that Char is now an empty narcissist following the fall of the Zabis, and understands he won’t be any better at guiding the future of Newtypes.

The result is a climactic final battle infused with Aura Battler Dunbine energy, featuring a “hyper” enlarged RX-78-2, albeit painted in its Grey Ghost livery (as seen above), while Lalah awakens and takes herself and the original Gundam back to their own universe.

Char and Challia share their “final duel,” during which Char realizes he must become a better person to avoid being killed by Challia.

We close with a montage showing Artesia taking the Zeon throne—an idea far better than letting Char lead, considering how his Neo Zeon rule turned out in Char’s Counterattack.

Machu and Nyaan remain on Earth at the beach, with Machu promising that the Gundam will help her find Shuji.

As a finale, it's definitely strong. It also tackles one of my main gripes—that Char was portrayed as something of a hero in this series. He was always intended to serve as a cautionary tale about the dangers of narcissism.

It seems the production team gets that point, though I still feel they lean too heavily in favor of Char, which might seem odd to anyone familiar with the broader Gundam saga.

That said, most of the above only makes sense if you're deeply familiar with the Universal Century Gundam lore.

That may explain why the series opened with high school clan battles borrowed from Witch from Mercury, then pivoted dramatically, leaving newcomers confused.

Gundam GQuuuuuuX offers a unique take on “what if” certain events had unfolded differently, and the multiverse angle is a fresh addition to Gundam (more or less). I'm just not convinced everything fits together cohesively.

Also worth noting: in the GQuuuuuuX timeline, all the Gundam mobile suits treat core fighters as their primary boosters—a concept introduced by Shoji Kawamori in Gundam 0083 with the GP-01, though I doubt he’ll receive credit for it here.

Overall, Gundam GQuuuuuuX took time to find its footing, but delivered strongly in the second half. I’d highly recommend watching as much Universal Century Gundam as possible before diving in—it dives deep into the lore in a way that longtime fans like myself will appreciate, but could leave newer viewers lost.

The series ends somewhat open-ended, with Shuji’s fate unknown and Machu and Nyaan joining forces to find him. I’d be interested in a second season, provided they eliminate the unnecessary clan battles and expand on the multiverse angle.
