'Destiny 2' Players Hate Edge Of Fate's 'New Gear' Grind Plan
Jun 26, 2025 am 10:39 AMThis was, however, likely the most-watched overview of the new changes due to the number of players who tuned in, and in at least one area, they’re confused and seem to dislike what they’re hearing about an upcoming “New Gear” system.
There are two components to this, but both center around the same idea. “New Gear” (as a proper noun) will be added to the game, similar to the armor and weapons we received every episode/season prior. However, it will now work alongside the upcoming gear “Tier” system.
The armor aspect seems like the worse of the two ideas. Bungie is implementing a system where players will gain a stacking damage-resist bonus over time by using New Gear armor sets and obtaining higher tiers of those sets. Over a certain period (I believe six months? Not three months? Unclear if that’s official), completing a full set of Tier 5 armor will grant a notable 15% damage reduction. Lower tiers of New Gear armor will provide less of a bonus. Non-New Gear armor gives you no benefit.
The issue arises when this bonus “expires.” After 6 (or maybe 3?) months, new New Gear armor will arrive, and you’ll have to start over—not only collecting Tier 5 New Gear armor again but also navigating a more complex stat system than before in order to build something worthwhile. It feels like an attempt to make players grind armor in a way not seen for some time, but it plays more like a punishment than a reward if you’re not keeping up. Some may dismiss the damage reduction as insignificant, but it still feels frustrating to know that the sets you’re grinding will be inferior in just a few months.
The weapon side of this is somewhat similar, though perhaps not as bad—but definitely more confusing. I’m pretty sure I’m going to get parts of this wrong because the system is so convoluted. And if it’s hard for me—a long-time 11-year player—to grasp, then the claim that these systems are more accessible for newcomers is laughable.
In this case, New Gear weapons will come with a stacking damage bonus up to 10%, depending on the tier, with Tier 5 getting the full bonus. Again, anything that isn’t New Gear is at a flat disadvantage.
Some compare this to current Artifact surges that offer temporary damage boosts during a season, but with how damage stacking works here, it doesn’t quite line up. Also, surges tend to offer a broader range of options rather than focusing almost entirely on that season’s gear.
As pointed out yesterday by u/wandering_caribou, this system creates a scenario where a god roll T1-3 weapon could do less damage than a T5 weapon due to this bonus system. But once the New Gear period ends, the lower-tier weapon could actually become better than the higher-tier one without that stacked damage bonus.
I’m not sure how impactful all of this will feel, but perception often becomes reality. Presenting this as a confusing system that primarily extends the grind while offering less content annually makes it easy to understand why players are turned off. Much of this feels like solving problems that don’t exist (the recent normal/adept/shiny weapon system has worked fine) or offering poor solutions to real issues (there's little reason to grind more than a couple armor sets outside of cosmetics).
I have concerns about the new Frontiers era of Destiny 2, but I think this New Gear system is something players are naturally inclined to hate. I expect major revisions to this system once it goes live—or maybe even before.
