"There’s that time span, and maybe I could explore what the recruiters or Captain Park [Oh Dal-su], the officers, or even the masked men were up to during that time — not within the game arena, but outside of it. It’s just a loose idea I have, but it might develop into something someday."

Despite that, he emphasized that Season 3 will serve as a true finale to the current narrative arc. Still, “I'm not trying to say that I'm going to close the door to spinoffs or sequels altogether because they say never say never.”

This proposed spinoff would mark a significant shift from the previous seasons of the show. Even if Lee Jung-jae remains attached as a star, it wouldn’t actually revolve around the Squid Game itself — which has been the central draw of the series so far. I’d definitely watch these characters exploring other aspects of their lives during that three-year period, but it does feel like an unusual direction. Perhaps a sequel or even a prequel focusing on another deadly game would feel more natural.

Still, this is all very speculative at this point. If Netflix sees potential, they’ll likely offer Hwang all the resources needed to bring more Squid Game content to life. But remember, this is the same man who became so overwhelmed making the series that he lost nearly half his teeth — seriously, he's missing almost a dozen. Dude, please take some time off.
