How To Play Strands
The New York Times’ Strands puzzle is a variation of the traditional word search. It’s currently in beta, so its continued presence depends on daily player engagement.
Each day offers a new Strands puzzle. You’ll be given a grid of letters measuring six by eight. Your goal is to locate a set of words that share a common feature, and you’ll receive a clue about what this theme might be. Upon discovering a theme word, it will stay highlighted in blue.
You’re also tasked with uncovering a special term known as a spangram. This reveals what the words have in common. The spangram spans from one side of the board to the opposite side. While theme words won’t be proper names, the spangram can be. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.
Be warned: You’ll need to be sharp.
“Some themes are fill-in-the-blank phrases. They may also be steps in a process, items that all belong to the same category, synonyms or homophones,” The New York Times explains. “Just as she varies the difficulty of Wordle puzzles throughout the week, [Wordle and Strands editor Tracy]
Bennett intends to challenge Strands players with unexpected twists now and then.” What Is Today’s Strands Hint?

SUPPLEMENTS
Here’s how it appears on the puzzle:
And the list of answers is as follows:
- ZINC
- FLAXSEED
- CALCIUM
- MAGNESIUM
- PROBIOTIC
Initially, I thought these would all be standard vitamins, but the theme covers a broader range—basically any kind of supplement. Some of these are commonly found in multivitamins, while others are usually taken separately. Taken together—and combined with many others not listed—you may be heading toward a healthier lifestyle, according to health professionals.
