It's Father’s Day today, but don’t expect the Mini Crossword to reflect that in any significant way. Consider that your first hint: There are no Father’s Day-related words in this puzzle. Anyway, it’s not Sunday yet and I’m sure you’ve got plenty of preparations for family activities, so I’ll keep this short. Let’s get solving!
The NYT Mini is a more compact and accessible version of the larger, more challenging NYT Crossword. Unlike the standard crossword, the Mini can be played for free without a New York Times subscription. You can access it via the web or through the app, though the latter is required if you want to play past puzzles.
Spoilers ahead! Here’s the first letter of each word.
Across
1A. Long, drawn-out story — starts with S
5A. With 6-Down, become hopelessly infatuated — starts with C
7A. Unsettled feeling — starts with A

9A. Passionate student, perhaps — starts with N
Down

Spoilers ahead! Here are all the answers.
Across
1A. Long, drawn-out story — SAGA
5A. With 6-Down, become hopelessly infatuated — CRUSH
7A. Unsettled feeling — AGITA
8A. Back tooth — MOLAR
9A. Passionate student, perhaps — NERD
Down
1D. A text saying "Congratulations! You’ve won a $1,000 gift card,” usually — SCAM
2D. Element between chlorine and potassium on the periodic table — ARGON
3D. Craftiness — GUILE
4D. "___ Is Born" (film) — A STAR
6D. See 5-Across — HARD
Here are all the words on the grid:
This puzzle was slightly easier than yesterday’s, though 5-Across and 6-Down were a bit tough due to vague clues. I wasn’t very familiar with AGITA either—agitate yes, but AGITA? Fortunately, other clues helped me piece it together. My biggest mistake came at 1-Down, where I initially typed SPAM instead of SCAM, but eventually figured it out. After all, PRUSH definitely isn't a word meaning “hopelessly infatuated.” The whole thing took me 2 minutes and 5 seconds.
