Hey folks, we’ve finally reached the moment! The Nintendo Switch 2 is starting to arrive at people’s homes, while others are queuing up at midnight launch events around the world.
Thanks to my awesome job, I got the console a day ahead of time. After using it for about 24 hours, I’m ready to share my initial thoughts. Some gamers are still unsure about dropping $450 on a new Nintendo console (and $80 for the new Mario Kart World), especially given the current economic climate. My complete Switch 2 review will be coming soon, but for now, let’s jump into my first day of gaming.
Since you’ve been waiting patiently, here’s my early take: It’s fantastic, though it does have a few quirks during setup.
My First Impressions of the Nintendo Switch 2
Please note: This isn’t a comprehensive review of the console, as I’ve only had it for just over 24 hours at the time of writing. Reviews of games like Mario Kart World and Rune Factory will follow. These are my unfiltered thoughts on the hardware and user experience so far. You can also check out my first impressions of the new Game Chat features.

Long-term storage could pose a challenge

When it was first announced, I thought it sounded fine. I incorrectly assumed that game file sizes wouldn’t increase significantly compared to the original Switch, but I was mistaken. To be fair, Nintendo’s own titles have been manageable so far; Mario Kart World is a reasonable 22GB, and the only other Nintendo release that exceeds 20GB is the Switch 2 version of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
However, third-party games tell a different story. Hitman: World of Assassination takes up 58GB, which accounts for roughly 22 percent of the internal storage. This makes sense since it’s essentially three games in one package, and it’s a much larger file size compared to other platforms. Street Fighter 6 clocks in at 48GB, which is substantial but expected for such a large game on other platforms as well.
The most puzzling example I’ve encountered is Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut. On a PlayStation 4, Yakuza 0 is 24GB. On a Switch 2, it’s a whopping 45GB. While there is extra content like new cutscenes, a multiplayer mode, and updated English voice acting, nearly doubling the file size seems excessive.

These are a new kind of memory card with faster data read speeds than regular microSD cards. While adopting this new standard is beneficial overall due to quicker game loading times, it means everyone needs to purchase a new card, and they’re currently pricey and scarce. Hopefully, prices will drop during sales events like Black Friday.
Even though I’ve mostly highlighted some minor issues with the Switch 2 so far, I want to emphasize that I truly enjoy it. Most of the games I’ve played have been impressive in their own ways, and the hardware represents a noticeable upgrade over the original Switch. It’s not perfect, but no product is.
Stay tuned for a full review soon. In the meantime, I’ll keep honing my skills in Mario Kart World.
Where to Purchase the Switch 2
At this point, the Switch 2 remains out of stock at major retailers, although price gouging is rampant on eBay. You can place an order through the My Nintendo Store or check the retailers listed below.
