Playing GameCube Classics On Nintendo Switch 2 Is Simply Fantastic
Jun 06, 2025 am 09:53 AMWhen the Switch 2 was unveiled, Nintendo mentioned they'd be introducing the Nintendo GameCube to the Nintendo Classics series, starting with The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Soulcalibur 2, and F-ZERO GX. They also confirmed that Super Mario Sunshine, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, Super Mario Strikers, Chibi-Robo! Plug Into Adventure, Luigi’s Mansion, and Pokémon Colosseum would follow suit.
Given the Nintendo GameCube's role in my gaming history, I'm thrilled about the possibilities. I even drafted a list of 13 GameCube titles I believe would fit perfectly in this collection. Here's hoping Nintendo takes notice!
Naturally, I tested all three GameCube games available so far and was thoroughly impressed. Let's dive in.
Soulcalibur 2 on Nintendo Switch 2
For me, this was the standout. Soulcalibur 2 is one of the few fighting games I truly enjoyed during my childhood, largely due to Link's inclusion. I'm pleased to say this game remains as engaging as ever.
First, I completed the Arcade mode as Link, finding the move list in the pause menu helpful. Gradually, my old skills returned. What I've always loved about Soulcalibur 2 are its additional modes beyond standard Arcade, particularly Weapon Master.
In Weapon Master mode, you tackle specific challenges with some narrative context to earn cash for unlocking new weapons for characters. These new weapons can then be used in Extra Arcade and other modes to change a character's fighting style. Link gains access to the Razor Sword from Majora’s Mask, a bug-catching net, and more—all with varying reach, attack, and defense attributes. Collecting all the weapons is enjoyable.
Adding excellent online multiplayer through the Nintendo Classics framework makes this one of my favorite games transferred to a new platform with improved visuals and features. A solid choice!
F-ZERO GX on Nintendo Switch 2
While not typically a F-Zero enthusiast, I respect what it aims to achieve. I usually lean towards combat racing like WipEout and Mario Kart, or the overlooked gem Blur, but F-Zero remains fun for its sheer speed and fantastic music.
The GameCube version of F-Zero GX is one of the fastest and toughest racing games I've ever attempted, and it still holds up after over two decades. Multiplayer works well, even if it's split-screen online, and it's entertaining to try with a buddy. There are numerous characters/ships to unlock, ensuring plenty of content.
F-Zero GX on Switch 2 feels like it received a quiet remaster. Frame rates are smooth, resolutions are sharp, and everything looks, sounds, and plays exceptionally. Definitely worth checking out.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker on Nintendo Switch 2
This is likely the title generating the most excitement, and rightly so. Since this is the original GameCube version, you miss out on the quality-of-life upgrades in the Wii U HD remake and widescreen support, but the trade-off is retaining the original art style without the added bloom effects of the HD version.
Personally, I prefer the original's visual style—it's cleaner and less cluttered with a distinct aesthetic. No complaints here.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker boasts my favorite video game soundtrack ever and is one of the best entries in the Zelda series. I hope more people experience it this way, and the addition of save states certainly enhances it further.
Critics may lament games being tied to subscription services—I largely agree with those concerns and prefer purchasing games outright—but I appreciate Nintendo's efforts to preserve their legacy here.
It's no secret the Switch 2 lacks a robust lineup of new games at launch. However, offering three of the best games from the early 2000s, enhanced and easily accessible for a small fee, is remarkable.
