As a crafting and survival game, Dune: Awakening prompts players to keep an eye on and handle multiple mechanics during their journey on Arrakis. Among these mechanics is research, which is one of the most crucial gameplay aspects to grasp early on since the game doesn't provide much explanation about it.
For that reason, we’ve put together this guide, which not only explains the processes involved in research but also shows why mastering this skill quickly is essential in Dune: Awakening. With that in mind, here’s everything you need to know about research.
What Is Research?
In Dune: Awakening, research is a gameplay mechanic that enables players to unlock items, weapons, and more for their use.
Accessing your player menu and selecting the 'Research' tab will let you view different research trees, including weapons, water discipline tech, and more.
To advance and proceed through your campaign, you’ll need to unlock more research so that you can then craft and fabricate these items and become stronger.
How Research Works
Research operates much like a skill tree, with some unique mechanics. Research is divided into several categories, outlined below:
Types Of Research
Research Category | Details |
---|---|
Essentials | Items necessary for progressing main story quests, either in the tutorial or later in the game. |
Water Discipline | Items and technology that conserve your water resources and enhance your hydration overall on Arrakis. |
Weapons | Items that upgrade your weapons, armor, and general loadout, whether ranged or melee. |
Construction | Items that improve sub-fief construction or contribute to refinement, power, and fabrication processes within your sub-fief. |
Exploration | Items that help you discover areas of Arrakis and explore the terrain, such as binoculars or survey drones. |
Vehicles | Items that allow you to navigate Arrakis more effectively, such as sand bikes and more. |
Uniques | Special items from all categories, like armor, weapons, and more. |
How To Unlock Research
On Arrakis, players must unlock research by spending a currency called Intel (which we’ll discuss in greater detail below).
Intel is earned in various ways throughout your adventure. After acquiring it, you can spend Intel points on research projects of your choice.
How To Gain Intel
There are two primary methods of obtaining Intel in Dune: Awakening.
- Leveling Up
- Collecting Site-Specific Intel
First, by playing Dune: Awakening normally, you will level up your character, and you can gain Intel points. Every time you level up, you’ll receive a few Intel points.
You can earn XP to level up by completing game missions, finishing contracts, battling enemies, and more.
Secondly, you can visit specific locations marked on your map with Intel.
When highlighting a map location (usually, a Breaker Station), the map will indicate what resource can be found there, whether that resource be Intel or materials.
If you don’t see any Intel sites, try using a Survey Drone to scan the nearby area.
Generally, you’ll be able to obtain one Intel at the location by clearing out the encampment and looting chests around. While this isn’t as efficient as simply gaining XP, you’ll still earn XP from the combat encounter.
There’s no benefit to saving Intel; once you have it, spend it!
