By Erik Kain
How To Play Strands
The New York Times’ Strands puzzle is a twist on the traditional word search. It’s currently in beta, meaning it will only stay around if enough people play it daily.
Every day brings a fresh Strands challenge. A six by eight grid of letters will appear before you. Your goal is to identify a set of words sharing a common theme, with a clue provided for that theme. Once you spot a theme word, it stays highlighted in blue.
You’ll also need to uncover a special word known as the spangram. This word reveals what the other words have in common. The spangram connects two opposite sides of the board. While theme words won’t be proper names, the spangram can be one. Finding the spangram keeps it highlighted in yellow.
Be prepared to stay sharp.
“Themes can include fill-in-the-blank phrases, steps in a process, items from the same category, synonyms, or homophones,” The New York Times explains. “As she does with Wordle puzzles, editor Tracy Bennett intends to introduce surprises occasionally.”

What Are Today’s Strands Answers?
Now let’s move to the answer section, starting with the spangram and listing all the other answers. The spangram is:
GARDEN
Here’s how it looks on the page—keep reading:
Today, we’re diving into a nursery rhyme originating from 1744 in England. Modern versions exist, and we’re using various words from that original poem:
Mary, Mary, quite contrary,
How does your garden grow?
With silver bells, and cockle shells,
And pretty maids all in a row
I found “contrary” easily, but the rest required some hints since this isn’t exactly bedtime reading for my kids. Plus, they keep changing the spangram—it’s just another word, not what it should be!
