Apple has released the second beta version of macOS Sonoma to users participating in its developer beta testing program.
macOS Sonoma, versioned as macOS 14, brings several new features to the Mac platform, including new screensavers, a revamped Lock Screen, the reintroduction of widgets to the Mac interface, enhanced Messages capabilities, Safari Profile support allowing separate profiles for work and personal use, FaceTime video messaging support, and numerous other updates and improvements.
While technically any user can join the Apple Developer program using their Apple ID to gain access to the macOS Sonoma beta on their Mac, it’s recommended for advanced users with secondary devices. A public beta will be made available next month.

Additionally, an Apple Silicon M1/M2 IPSW file for macOS Sonoma beta 2 is available for download. This file can be used to restore other Macs or set up virtual machines easily.

Notably, the initial beta of macOS Sonoma proved surprisingly stable during a fresh installation, though some third-party applications frequently crashed. Despite this, the beta version of Sonoma felt comparable in stability to Ventura releases (a macOS version I personally don’t favor). It remains to be seen how stable the second beta version will be.
As the name suggests, the developer beta is designed for developers and advanced users. However, since anyone can enroll their Apple ID in the Apple Developer program, it’s possible for anyone to install macOS Sonoma beta. Given the potential instability of beta software, this is best suited for experienced users and secondary devices. Casual users should wait for the public beta or the official release later this year.
The final version of macOS Sonoma will be available as a free software update for all Mac users this fall.
