Revised Rapid Security Response Updates for iOS 16.5.1 (c), macOS Ventura 13.4.1 (c), Released

Apple has once again issued Rapid Security Response Updates for MacOS, iOS, and iPadOS, this time labeled as iOS 16.5.1 (c), iPadOS 16.5.1 (c), and MacOS Ventura 13.4.1 (c), to tackle a known and currently exploited security flaw in Safari.

These latest rapid response updates come after earlier rapid security response updates (marked with an (a) rather than a (c)) were withdrawn from distribution due to issues preventing access to numerous websites.

Given the apparent haste and insufficient testing involved in these types of rapid updates that automatically install themselves, some users might have disabled the automatic installation of rapid response updates on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac, requiring them to update manually.

How to Manually Install Security Response Updates for iOS 16.5.1 (c), iPadOS 16.5.1 (c)

To manually install the update on an iPhone or iPad, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to “Settings,” then proceed to “General.”
  2. Head to “Software Update” and opt to “Download and Install” upon seeing “iOS Security Response Update 16.5.1 (c)” or “iPadOS Security Response Update 16.5.1 (c).”

These updates are relatively compact in size, often only around 1.4MB, but they still demand at least 5GB of storage space for installation. Therefore, users with limited storage capacity may need to clear significant disk space before applying the update.

The iPhone or iPad will reboot to finalize the installation process, similar to any other software update.

How to Manually Install Security Response Updates for MacOS Ventura 13.4.1 (c)

Manually updating on a Mac is straightforward:

  1. Access the ? Apple menu > “System Settings.”
  2. Proceed to “General.”
  3. Move to “Software Update” and select the option to update when “macOS Security Response Update 13.4.1 (c)” becomes available for download.

A restart of the Mac is necessary to complete the installation process.

If you're actively using the iOS 17 beta, iPadOS 17 beta, or MacOS Sonoma beta, it’s presumed that the third beta releases of those operating systems incorporate the same Safari fix, though this hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.
